At the Gabba on Saturday night,
Alistair Lynch made a solid comeback with the Lion Cubs. However,
it was four goals by Voss and three by Dean Headland which provided
the platform for the Cubs' 33 point win over the previously undefeated
Labrador. It was a surpisingly entertaining match for a curtain-raiser
to the Lions-Collingwood game, with good ball control in greasy
conditions. Relatively untroubled, the Cubs continue their slow
climb up the ladder, now in equal third position. Best on the
night were McDonald, Voss, Dobson, Boulton and Picken for the
Cubs, with Wright, Firman, Donnellon and Lamb the best for Labrador.
Maroochydore's dismal start to
the season continued when they were hammered by the Cats to the
tune of 82 points. It was an amazing defensive display by Broadbeach
who kept the Roos scoreless after quarter-time, and a ruthless
attacking effort after booting 40 points in their opening term
in boggy conditions. Best on the day were Ellis, McGuane, Schumacher,
Oldham, Evans, Booker and Johnson for Broadbeach, with Hart,
Handley, Olive and Fisher the pick for Maroochydore.
League superpower and reigning
premiers Southport have achieved their aim of going undefeated
into the bye-week after disposing of the Northern Eagles by 18
points in a bruising encounter at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.
The Sharks managed to overcome a slow start in wet and slippery
conditions where they found themselves trailing by 8 points at
the first break. With seven different goal-kickers for their
ten goals it was a solid team effort from the premiers, who are
well on their way to winning back-to-back flags. Outstanding
for the Sharks were Shaun Stephens, Damon Lawrence and Mark Bradley.
Best for the Eagles were Dickfos, Benham and Webb.
Last year's premiership runners-up
Morningside continued on their slide into oblivion with a disappointing
one-point loss to the Vultures at Klumpp Road on Sunday. In a
tight and tough derby, Mt. Gravatt slid over the line by the
bearest of margins to keep in touch with the competition leaders.
For the Panthers, wayward kicking proved fatal in the final analysis.
With wet conditions dictating the style of play, there were no
real standouts. However, plenty of heart was shown by both sides.
In the AFL tipping competition
(FOOTYPIX) David Chadwick continues to lead the fray on 40, but
it was Craig Sanderson's amazing 7 out of 8 on a weekend full
of shock results that has people guessing .... I think we may
have to introduce some random drug-testing !!!!
In first division results, the
Sandgate Seahawks triumphed over the Western Magpies by 7 points
(10-14 to 10-7) in the local derby. Other winners were Palm Beach-Currumbin
who defeated Surfers Paradise 16-19-115 to 6-5-41 and Burleigh
who rolled an unlucky Robina 8-8-56 to 7-8-50.
