In a sloppy match at the Gabba,
the Lion Cubs outplayed and dominated the Maroochydore Roos to
record a solid 31-point victory. In slippery conditions and before
a record Gabba-Lions crowd, McDonald and Notting notched 4 goals
each for the Cubs, while Fisher landed 3 for the Roos. Best on
the day were Voss, McDonald, Picken, Boulton and Loney for the
Cubs while Vagg, Clarke, Charles and the Fishers tried hard for
the Roos. The win pushes the Cubs up to equal second on the ladder
while effectively slamming the door shut on Maroochydore's premiership
aspirations.
At Klumpp Road swamplands, the
Southport Sharks notched their sixth straight win in quagmire
conditions over the Vultures. A scoreless second term effectively
killed off any chances Mt. Gravatt had of upsetting the yet undefeated
reigning premiers. All credit must go to the Sharks who handled
the conditions much better than their counterparts, always being
first to a slippery pill and then controlling it for the majority
of the match. Mackay and Backhouse slotted three majors each
for the Sharks while Dupuy, Allen and Tudhope kicked one each
for the Vultures. Difficult to pick the best as everyone appeared
to be donning the same bog-coloured guernsey after the first
five minutes. However, Ballins, McCluckie, Wise, McKenzie and
Deacon played well for Southport, and Lanyon, Collins and Davies
battled hard all day for Mt. Gravatt.
As Labrador's ground resembled
a lake, this match was transferred to the Eagles' nest at O'Callaghan
Park (so my spy Matty informs me) .... not that it affected the
final result any .... the Eagles doing it easy, kicking seven
goals to two in the second half to roll the second-placed Tigers.
Williamson for the Eagles was easily the day's shining star with
six sausage-rolls to his name. It could be said that Labrador
had their chances, but a solid premiership quarter from the Zillmere
boys saw their lead balloon from 2 out to 19 points, sealing
the Tigers' fate. Flying high for the Eagles were Meunch, Deeth,
Benham, Buchanan and Bulley. Best on the losing side were Firman,
Wood, Browne, Wright and Donnellon.
At Kedron, Mayne steamrolled
a plucky Broadbeach in the last term to record an impressive
15-point win. With scores deadlocked at the big break, and then
trailing by five points at three-quarter time, the Tigers kicked
5-1 to 1-5 in the final term to take match honours, thus keeping
in touch with the competition leaders. Reid Dobson, with five
goals for the Tigers was easily best-on-ground, ably supported
by Fisher, Lynch, DeBrini and Pearce. Standout for the Cats was
Richard Patching who was well supported by Tanis, Foat and Wilkinson.
The move of Mayne utility Rob Green on to the Cats' Korey Fulton
(4 goals) was crucial in terms of the final washup.
Next week sees a top-of-the-table
local derby at the Tigers' lair as Labrador go head-to-head with
the Sharks, the battle for the wooden spoon is on in earnest
as Maroochydore takes on Morningside at Hawthorne Park, Mayne
and Mt. Gravatt will duel at Kedron, and Broadbeach will trek
yet again up the Pacific highway to do battle with the Northern
Eagles at Zillmere. The Lion Cubs have the bye.
Higgsy's Hints
For mine, warm premiership favourites Southport should account
for a game Labrador outfit, the Panthers should shrug off their
recent poor form to account for the Roos, Mt. Gravatt should
have too many big guns for the Tigers, and the Eagles should
be far too strong at home for the Cats.
AFL Footypix Tipping Competition
Big news this week is the first-second place positional swap
between David Chadwick and Craig Sanderson who are going toe-to-toe
at the top of the table. Movers this week are Jim Anderson (+8)
Graham McColm (with 7/8), Dave Fraser, Neil Wilkinson, Norm Jamison
and Trevor Dann (all +6), while Mark Landgraf had a shocker with
only 2/8 and dropped 15 places. Yours truly, with 5/8, is still
hovering for the kill in 4th spot. Bowesy and Greeny still bring
up the rear.
