Mayne's giant-killing form certainly
came to an abrupt and embarrassing end at Fankhauser Reserve
on Saturday when they were crushed by the Sharks 22-22 to 2-7.
It was a day well worth forgetting for Mayne, Southport keeping
the young Tigers outfit goalless in the first term and scoreless
in the third while piling on seven, five, seven and three goals
in each quarter respectively. After recording solid wins over
the Eagles and Panthers in recent weeks, this match shaped as
an opportunity for the Tigers to make a stand and announce their
intentions for the rest of the season. However, it wasn't to
be and the Sharks simply steamrolled them from the first bounce.
A seven goals to nil opening term by Southport ensured it would
be a long afternoon for Mayne and their small band of supporters.
The Sharks must now be staring at some sort of record in only
conceding 294 points in their nine games to date. Mackay, Deacon
and Black each slotted four goals for Southport with Bradley,
McCluckie, Watts, Pemberton and McKenzie their best. For the
Tigers, Bermingham, DeBrinni, Robbins and Lynch never gave up
with Ryan and Lynch being the Tigers' only goal-scorers.
Mt. Gravatt led from go-to-whoa
in recording a solid 24-point win over a goal-shy Cubs at Dittmer
Park on Saturday, reversing the third round result. The Vultures
gained an important psychological edge over the Cubs who are
battling with the Vultures and Eagles for that all-important
top three position. Aside from Tim Notting who booted four goals,
the Cubs goalkicking was nothing short of woeful, kicking two
goals nine in the second term and blowing a huge opportunity
to reel in Mounties. Mounties coach Dean Bailey said the result
would take on more importance as the season wore on. One highlight
was the improving form of Daniel Bradshaw in only his second
game back from injury - taking several terrific grabs. Full-forward
Geoff Buswell kicked five goals in trying conditions for Mounties
with Brad Jones dominating the centre to ensure they took the
match and consolidated their second position on the ladder. The
Vultures' best were Harman, Lanyon, Dobbs, Rankin and Wolbers.
For the Cubs, Shattock, Notting, Dobbs, Roach and McCormack never
stopped trying.
Broadbeach managed to keep their
ever-so-slim finals chances alive when they outmuscled the Panthers
by 34 points in blustery conditions at home. Such were the conditions
only nine goals were kicked on the day with Burgess (Broadbeach)
the only multiple goalkicker with two. The damage was done by
the Cats with a four goal to one opening quarter, ensuring the
Panthers would be playing catch-up football for the rest of the
afternoon. At times the match looked as if it was being played
in slow-motion, due to the toll the conditions took on some players.
The final quarter provided a total of two points in a match both
sides would be looking to forget. Best (?) were Covino, Lynch,
Wilkinson, Oldham and Walsh for the winning team and Gough, Davis,
Longland and Edwards for the losing team.
Labrador recorded their second
win in a row after their recent slump in disposing of the Roos
by ten goals at Maroochydore. Bartlett led from the front all
day in bagging six majors with his dead-eye-dick kicking a feature.
Collins also jammed three through for the Tiges. The Roos were
never in the hunt after being held scoreless for the first term,
although they did manage to outscore the Tigers in the second
term. The win keeps Labrador in a position to make an assault
on a top three berth come finals time. Best for the Tiges were
Donnellen, Lamb, Gurciullo and Bartlett with Olive, Michael,
Vagg, Stenhouse and Clarke trying hard for the Roos. Maroochydore's
position in the top league must surely be under a cloud, with
the league considering relegation back a division for next year.
The Roos rise from the Amateur Leagues has been nothing short
of meteoric, but they do appear to be that one step behind in
class.
Next Week
Round 12 sees the last opportunity
for players to impress for selection in the state side to take
on the V.M.F.L. at Brisbane Lions Football Park (Coorparoo) the
following week-end. At the coast, Broady will host the unbeaten
Sharks, Labrador travel up to take on Mayne in a Tigers cat-fight
which will sort out Mayne's flag hopes once and for all, Morningside
host the Cubs, Mounties drive across town to take on the Eagles
at Zillmere, and Maroochydore can start planning their end-of-season
trip on their bye week-end.
Higgsy's Hints
Back to form .... yes, 4/4 ....
and I was pretty close with the winning margins also. 36/44 ....
it would be nice if I could tip the AFL as well as I do the local
comp. Broady will try hard at home, perhaps matching Southport
for a quarter or so, but the Sharks are just too good here ....
Sharks by eight goals. This will probably be Mayne's last grab
at a finals spot, and I think they might roll an inconsistent
Labrador at home, despite the thumping they copped this week
.... Mayne by three goals. At Esplen oval, the Panthers might
upset a lethargic (and understrength) Cubs .... Panthers by three
goals. The grudge match of the round will be at O'Callaghan Park
where Mounties (who won by five points last time) and the Eagles
will belt each other senseless ... no love lost here .... my
tip is Mounties by two goals (with the blue to finish a draw,
but well worth the admission price!!!) Bugner, Tyson and Holyfield
have nothing on this one
.....
