An unconvincing Southport performance
has notched the club's tenth straight win to stay on course for
an unbeaten season, this time at the expense of a tenacious Broadbeach.
The Cats made the most of limited opportunities in the first
half, kicking six straight goals from the seven times they entered
the Sharks' danger area. The Sharks looked out of sorts early
following the pumping they handed out to Mayne last week, prompting
their football manager Gary Watts to comment that their "approach
needed work". He also added that while their aim is to finish
undefeated, they didn't want to drop the last one. It should
be noted that the last time a side remained undefeated throughout
a season was the now defunct Windsor club back in 1951. Coach
Jason Cotter was livid with his troops' first half effort and
tore absolute strips off them in the sheds at the big break.
The second half was a marginally better effort, but the Sharks'
conversion rate was not that of a side who are supposedly unbackable
flag favourites. Players to impress were Black (4 goals), Mansbridge
(3), Backhouse (2), Lawrence, Coughlin and Crossley for Southport,
and Oldham, Harrison, Schumacher, Taylor and Booker for the Cats.
The race for a final five position
could well be over after flamboyant forward Trent Bartlett led
Labrador to a crucial 14-point win over the Mayne in the battle
of the Tigers at Kedron on Saturday. Bartlett landed seven majors
in offering a strong target up front from the outset, and beating
a string of opponents throughout the day. The win was even more
meritorious for the "Coast" Tigers given that their
early Grogan Medal favourite Andy Gowers was absent in Melbourne
with the Lions. The match was tight throughout the first term,
but a six goal to two premiership term set up the win. Bartlett
was ably supported by Collins who nailed three and Hutchins slotting
two. Baker, Bartlett, Lamb, Gurciullo and Fair impressed for
the "Coast" Tiges, and Green, Bermingham, Nolan, Wickham
and DeBrinni battled all day for the "City" Tiges.
Nine goals twenty-eight behinds
for this diabolical match is all that needs to be said about
the Morningside-Cubs game. It's matches like this that justify
the lack of media coverage for QSFL games, and everyone involved
with this match should take a good hard look at themselves !!!
After years of amalgamations,
relegations, promotions and general changes to the makeup of
the league, the Eagles-Vultures games are the closest we have
left to a "local derby". And for those that saw it
. it didn't disappoint. The final score didn't do justice
to this match
. it had everything. (I didn't see this match
personally, as I was off watching a mate playing a rival code
.) However, my spy informs me that there may be a little
bit to be heard about this match during the week. Shirt-fronts,
head-highs, late hits and a late all-in donnybrook (as predicted),
combined with some big grabs, 50-metre sausage rolls and terrific
ruck contests had the small but vocal crowd enthralled to the
end. Mounties were mildly disappointing overall, but take nothin'
away from the Eagles keenness to mix it with their much bigger
counterparts. I see Williamson bagged another four to keep him
right up there in the goalkicking honours. Anyway, Benham, Czerner,
Watts, Reeves and Smith flew high for the Eagles, with Dupuy,
Jones, Grayson and "Where'd that come from" Lanyon
tried hard all day for the Vultures. (Did they manage to straighten
it after the match, Greeny??)
Other News
Good on ya boys
. our state
U/18 side currently playing in the national championships here
in Brissie got up on Saturday when they flogged (?) the two-headed
Taswegians by eight points. Eight goalkickers for the maroons
was the result of a terrific team effort
. our best players
being too numerous to name. Keep up the good work, boys and we'll
kick NSW/ACT's ass all the way back over the border this Friday.
For those unaware, there is a local "Footy" show televised
on BRIZ-31 at 9:00pm each Thursday night hosted by Richard Griffiths
and Andy Gowers. Each week there are special guests, previews
of upcoming AFL matches, and discussions on the local footy scene.
It's certainly much better viewing than that Sydney rugby league
crap show on channel nine. Where's BRIZ-31 I hear you ask
.
Channel-31 on UHF, just up from SBS (Channel-28). And if you
miss it on Thursday night, it's replayed at 12:30pm on Saturday
afternoons.
Rumblings from around the grounds have surfaced in strong rumours
that the Mt. Gravatt Vultures may be changing their emblem from
a vulture, to a kangaroo. This suits the Victorian contingent
at the club I s'pose as their strip resembles the blue/white
version of North Melbourne, sorry, the kangas. It also follows
in that Mounties' step up from the BAFL to the QSFL some seven
years ago was the result of the demise of the Coorparoo Roos
club (Jason Dunstall's old hunting ground) and the ensuing player
exodus to Klumpp Road chasing better $$$$$. As a 'roo old boy,
I don't have a problem with the re-adoption of the kangaroo,
but let's get fair dinkum and alter the shit blue/white stripes
to a navy blue with CFC emblazoned across the front. (Oh, when
the 'roos
. Go marching in
. Oh, when the 'roos go
mar-ching in
.) If it happened, I might even be convinced
to re-lace the old leathers for one last kick
.
Next Week
There are no QSFL fixtures next
week as the QSFL representative side takes on the Victorian Metropolitan
Football League rep side (whoever the hell they are!!!) at Brisbane
Lions Football Park on Saturday 10/7. First bounce is 11:30am
. Thumbs up to the QSFL on setting the earlier time, thus
allowing footy fans the opportunity to head off to the Gabba
afterwards to see the Lions bash Hawthorn.
The QSFL squad as it stands barring
any injuries and reports from the weekend's fixtures (I don't
think there's any
.) is as follows :
Southport
S. Ballans,M. Bradley,S. Coughlin,T. Deacon,D. Lawrence,R. Mackay,A.

Higgsy's Hints
Let's see how I go predicting
this match
. especially since we got pumped last year !!!
In my ever-so-humble opinion, I think we'll go okay this year,
and get up by a conservative 4 goals. (What do I know about the
VMFL side
absolutely nuttin' , but hey
. Gotta support
the local lads !!!!)
2/4 last week
. Very ordinary
I must say !!! This gives me 38/48, and I've certainly slipped
from my perch in the last few weeks.
AFL Footypix Tipping Competition
I've said it before and I'll
say it again
. watch the big fella go !!!! I dobbed 6/8
this week, leaving me second on 72 only to Dave Chadwick (75),
but right up his clacker. Big movers this week were Brett Waterson
who shifted up seven places and both Richard Marsden and Robby
Bowes who climbed five. Losers for the round were Donny Schultz,
Mitchell Ross and big Matty who slipped, no tumbled,no collapsed
in a heap, all dropping nine spots. Lift your knuckles, boys
.
