Good to see you all again. I'm
motivated to write (type?) this week as both Brisbane footy sides
(League and AFL) had good wins against top sides on the weekend.
Speaking of which ... what a weekend .... Footy - drink - footy
- drink - footy - drink ..... VERY hard to take! Firstly I'll
mention that BRISBANE IS SICK OF THIS BLOODY RAIN !!!! Christ,
it's fine all week then pisses down all week-end .... What's
goin' on? This explains why so many footy scores resemble rugby
scores ....
In quagmire conditions (AGAIN!!!),
Morningside led the unbeaten Sharks until half-time until fading
away badly .... AGAIN ....(disappearing in the mud more like
it!). The Panthers actually kicked two goals to one on the Sharks
and thoroughly deserved to be in front. After the major break
though, it was as if a different Panthers outfit took the field
.... no hunger, no intensity .... and no goals !!! I know the
conditions were shocking, but the Panthers' performances all
year are unexplainable .... I can assure everyone who's not from
Brissie that it would be like North Melbourne not winning a game!!!
What's gone wrong??? .... They've got a terrific side on paper
yet can't win .... Or at least perform !!! On the Sharks though,
some ordinary performances in recent weeks must be concerning
to club management. Anyway, best on the day were Mansbridge,
Bradley, Crossley and Stephens for the Sharks, with the Edwards
brothers, Gough and Kenna never giving in for the 'Siders.
Mayne Tigers kept their slim
(VERY slim!) finals hopes alive with a rather lucky twelve point
win at the Gabba. Although blustery and wet, the Tige's made
the best of limited opportunities to roll a goal-shy Cubs. This
is not new for the Cubs, who have been guilty of poor kicking
in the past. However, this time it has cost them an invaluable
win in the run-up to the finals, especially when you consider
their last match is a bye. (There are no points attached to byes
in the premier league) This means they have almost certainly
kicked themselves out of an all-important top-three spot. Tut-Tut-Tut
.... The Cubs were actually unlucky to lose in that they had
the better of play all day but couldn't convert. Headland with
four goals was close to the Cubs' best, along with Knobel, Rusca,
Picken, Cooper and Reid. For Mayne, Green bagged four, and was
suitably supported by Robbins, Nolan, DeBrenni and Fischer throughout
the day.
The Mt. Gravatt Vultures sewed
up a double-chance finals spot on Saturday, when they gathered
to feast on the Labrador Tigers in attrocious conditions at Klumpp
Road. Mounties played faultless wet-weather footy to keep the
Tigers goalless until mid-way thru the final term. Despite the
weather being tailor-made for the little men, it was Mounties'
big'uns who made the difference, with Justyn Hope and promising
teenager Toby Grayson putting their bodies in front and on the
line all day. Hope kicked three "sausage rolls" including
two soccer-specials off the ground. They were well-supported
by skipper Jamie Dobbs and the mercurial Brad Jones and Tony
Lynn, while Glen Hutchins and Karl Wood tried hard for the outclassed
Tige's. Mounties football manager Victor DiVenuto commented after
the game that "it was almost like a rugby match .... We
just kept at it and got the numbers around the ball. "
The Northern Eagles "got
the jump" on the Roos in their boggy clash (?) at Maroochy's
ground on the sunshine coast, with a quick-fire four goals from
which the Roos never recovered. On a dry ground, the score could
have been anything, such was the difference in class between
the two sides. This was a good hit-out for the Eagles, when you
consider the upcoming matches leading to the playoffs. The Roos
were never in the hunt, but solid performances were put in by
Michael, Murnane, Barr, Clarke and Johnson. For the Zillmere
boys, Reeves, Watts, Smith, Dean and Dickfos were outstanding
in the muck.
Other News
The Mayne Tigers Football Club
are holding a 75th year anniversary and re-union function on
Saturday 7th August. Festivities will commence at 1:00pm at the
Kedron Oval (Sixth Avenue, Kedron) where a special area will
be set aside for past players and supporters to cheer on the
Tige's for their home game against Morningside that day.
A smorgasbord dinner will follow
the game at 7:30pm at the adjoining club with a cost of $20 per
head. It will be a great opportunity for old friends and players
who have been involved with the famous club to renew acquaintances.
Reforming the "Old Boys" will be a topic for discussion,
and Mayne's "Team of the Century" will be announced.
All "old" Tigers are asked to contact organising chairman
Barry Coghill on 3263 6885 or president Murdoch Campbell on 3857
1404 .... Mobile 0418 181 200.
Next Week
Round 15 sees an all-important
round of fixtures crucial to the final makeup of the semis.
Southport will mix it with the Vultures down at Fankhauser Reserve
on Saturday and the Eagles host fellow-finals hopes Labrador
at O'Callaghan Park. The Lion Cubs travel up the coast to play
Marrochydore while Mayne head down the coast to take on the Cats.
The 'Siders have a desperately needed bye.
Higgsy's Hints
Well it certainly is crunch-time
for the contenders. The Sharks, although still undefeated, have
been playing the worst football I can remember them playing ...
(Says plenty about their opposition ...) and are taking on Mounties
in what some say is the preview to the "big one". I'm
not so sure, I've seen Mounties this year and they seem to be
found "wanting" when a side really puts it on 'em.
I think I'll have to stick with the home-boys (and favourites!)
.... Sharks to return to form and win by three goals in a toughie.
The other crunchie is the Eagles v Labrador match .... Hmmm ....
The Tige's HAVE to produce here, but I think they're up against
it. Eagles by five goals if it's fine (which would be nice for
a change!) The Cubs'll pump Maroochy, and Mayne will roll Broady
by four in a roughie.
Three out of four A-GAIN giving
me 44/56 for the season. I should have had the clean-sweep except
the Cubs still don't know how to kick straight!!!
AFL Footypix Tipping Competition
Another sensational performance
in the AFL tipping with 7/8 for Rd.17 keeping me in line for
the silver medal!!!! The only problem was that Chaddo up front
jagged eight .... Is he on drugs or what??? Unbelievable .....
Big movers for the week were
Jim Anderson who tumbled 12 spots, and Peter Danaher (up 7) and
Brian Waterson (up 6) who both also jagged eight. In the 8/8
stakes, Chaddo,Richard,Wilko and big Brian have all "fluked"
it twice, with five people (not me!) doing it once.
