Hello again and welcome to all
those devout Banana-land footy fans around the globe. I received
an e-mail recently from the sister of Sharks' captain David Bain
who lives in Malaysia. I appreciate your thoughts Sandra and
will endeavour to provide as much info as I can get my grubby
little fingers on each week. And yes, I'd be booking tickets
for the final
. In fact, I'd be saving a seat at the Sharks'
GF celebratory evening also!!! If anyone has any queries or suggestions
regarding this page, be sure to e-mail me, and I'll see what
I can do. Anyway, on with the show
.
Well
. I think it's safe
to say that the Maroochy put in a diabolical performance against
the Sharks, going down by 24 goals on Saturday. No, that's probably
a bit harsh, it was probably more of a welcome return to their
ruthless best for Southport, and a good example of what is to
come in the finals. The Sharks dominated every aspect of play
from go to whoa, with Mackay bagging ten and Coughlin five. A
six-goals-to-one first term followed by nine to nil in the second
nailed the lid shut on this match. There wasn't a bad performer
for the Sharks, with Mackay, Stevens, McCluckie, Bain and Ballans
putting in standout performances. For the Roos, Vagg, Michael,
Stenhouse, Smith and Fisher never gave an inch.
Morningside's larger-than-life
Brad Edwards single-handedly tore Mayne's finals aspirations
apart at Kedron on Saturday, with a dominant forward display.
The loss effectively extinguishes Mayne's hopes for playing in
September, along with dampening the club's 75th anniversary celebrations
afterwards. If every result from here on goes their way, it is
possible though. Realistically, it's all over for the Tige's
. And if they did scrape into the finals, I can assure
you they would only be making up numbers. Mapleston (5) and Evans
(4) did the damage on the scoreboard for the Panthers, with Smyth
and Bermingham jagging 2 each for the Tige's. Panthers' best
were Gough, the Edwards' brothers, Mapleston and Conroy, while
for Mayne Stone, Housego, Frigo, Wray and Jordan never stopped
trying.
Mounties were always too strong
for Broady at home, rattling up a non-chalant 22-point victory.
The Vultures never got into top gear
. and didn't need
to. The season is over for the Cats now, but they can upset others
in coming weeks. The locals were always that step up in class
on Broady, pulling away by a goal or two in each quarter. The
Cats should be congratulated though on never throwing in the
towel, and giving the teams in the finals a shake throughout
the season. For Mounties, Dupuy slotted 4 more, while Robson
nailed five for Broady. Best Vultures included Dupuy, Lynn, Jones
and Dobbs, while the Cats' performers were Robson, Fulton, Burgess
and Ellis.
The last match of the round was
at O'Callaghan Park where the Eagles hosted the Lion Cubs. In
a good preview to the finals, the Eagles ran out comfortable
33-point winners, showing up the importance of having a solid
mix of youth and experience - the latter being lacked by the
Lions "young guns". Teenage Kilcoy product Robert Copeland
was outstanding for the Eagles, and may have even been BOG. The
ever-strengthening Eagles effectively sewed up a double-chance
with the win, and relegated the Cubs to a last-minute chicken-scratch
for 4th and fifth. The Eagles are shaping up as a potentially
solid performer during the finals, and are the only side to have
pushed the Sharks this year. Best for the Eagles were Copeland,
Deeth, Dean, Weller and Reeves. Cubs' best performers were Knobel,
Cooper, Tana-Hill, Bartlett and Gowers. Robbie Williamson added
five more to his season total with the Cubs' Picken kicking four.
Other News
No goss this week.
Next Week
The penultimate round of the
home and away season falls upon us next week, with Morningside
hosting the Eagles, Broadbeach travelling five minutes up the
road to Labrador, Mayne making the trip up to the Sunshine Coast
to take on Maroochydore, and the Lion Cubs taking on the undefeated
Sharks at the Gabba in the curtain-raiser to the Lions-Freo match.
Mounties have the bye, but as they are safely in second spot,
I don't think they will mind the lay-off to overcome a few niggly
injuries.
Higgsy's Hints
Although their season is basically
over, the Panthers certainly have lost pride to play for on Saturday
against the Zillmere boys
. Hmmm
. No, I can't go
past the Eagles in this one - Eagles by four goals, but 'side
to put up a good show. Labrador and Broady is what I think will
be the match of the round. Broady can "mathematically"
still make it while the Tige's can still "mathematically"
earn the double-chance
. I might go the upset this week
and suggest the Cats might get the money by three goals. I know
Maroochydore are at home, but Mayne will be pissed at their attrocious
effort and lack of commitment last week against the lowly Panthers
. I think they will rout the Roos in no uncertain terms.
Although the Cubs are at the Gabba in front of good local support,
the Sharks won't stumble now
. Southport by five goals.
Three out of four yet again (how
many times have I said that?) gives me 50/64 for the season.
I've gone one upset this week
. I bet that's the one I
get wrong ???
AFL Footypix Tipping Competition
Well Chaddo is still out in
front by four, both he and I jagging five this week. (I just
don't seem to be able to cut that gap) Rob Zubrinich, Mark Ramage,
Lindsay Hegarty and Tom Usher all nailed 7/8, while Dave Fraser
shooting for "money-back" last and got 1. Big movers
were Mark R up five, Scott Bool down and Frank down 5.
