2000 AFL Team List Changes Adelaide. Off: David Pittman - retired Simon Tregenza - retired Matthew Liptak - retired Rod Jameson - retired Lance Picioane - traded to Hawthorn for a draft pick. Darryl Wintle - delisted Lucas Herbert - delisted Clint Kirey - delisted Ian Downsborough - delisted Brodie Atkinson - delisted On: Matthew Clarke (Brisbane). Excellent tap ruckman but, as his Ansett Cup appearance showed, pretty useless anywhere else. The Lions say he went because of salary cap problems - and they've got a 400 grand bonus. Originally from West Gambier, also played for South Adelaide. Scott Welsh (North Melbourne). Arrives as part of the Colbert deal, a decent, strong-marking forward flanker whom the Roos used off the bench. 36 games for 30 goals including one in 99 Grand Final, 14 goals in 3 AC matches this year. From West Adelaide originally. Rhett Biglands (Port Adelaide (SANFL)). The Camrys' first draft pick, at no. 36 after they traded for Clarke and Welsh. Biglands is a 22-year-old ruckman, who spent 1997 on Port's AFL list without playing a game. Ricky O'Loughlin (Port Adelaide (SANFL)). Younger brother of Swan Michael, he's also a goalkicking half forward. Justin Cicolella (Woodville-West Torrens). Older (21) drafted rover who, according to The Age (1/11/99), was 178 cm and 180 kg. Ansett Cup appearances suggest he had a big pre-season. Robert Shirley (Woodville-West Torrens). Shirley they can't be serious? Mobile six-footer who likes the big grab. Tipped to debut this year. Balraj Singh (West Adelaide). Key forward who did well in the U18 championships. First bloke of Indian extraction to be on an AFL list. Matthew Shir (Murray Bushrangers). Midfielder with good hands. That usually means he's slow as a referendum campaign. James Byrne (Glenelg). Pre-season draftee, running defender-type. Andrew Crowell (Woodville/West Torrens). Selected in pre-season draft, kicked a few goals in 2 Ansett Cup games. Brisbane Off: Brad Boyd - retired Danny Dickfos - retired Matthew Clarke - traded to Adelaide for draft picks. Trent Bartlett - traded to the Bulldogs for Martin. David Calthorpe - traded to North as part of Colbert deal. Shane O'Bree - refused new contract, citing homesickness. Pre-season- drafted by Pies. Dion Scott - delisted Andrew Gowers - delisted Tate Day - delisted On: Michael Martin (Footscray). Decent midfielder frustrated by lack of opportunities with the Dogs. Played every game in 1998 but only seven last year. Stefan Carey (Sydney). Fairly useless big man. His bulbous bald head is useful for teammates, e.g. "There's Carey. Better look for another lead." Damien Cupido (Eastern Ranges). First-round draft pick (no. 6), a speedy, left-footed winger who's modelled his game on Michael Long. Born in Cape Town, his family emigrated in 1988. Jonathon Brown (Geelong Falcons). Picked up under the father/son rule - Dad Brian played for Fitzroy. Jon is a tough key position player, CHF or CHB, who was highly rated by Essendon. Shane Morrison (Northern Eagles (QAFL)). Also a father/son draftee - Pop Morrison played in the QAFL. Son's also a tall, potential key position player. Carlton Off: Matthew Hogg - retired Brad Pearce - delisted Adrian Whitehead - delisted Trent Hoppner - delisted Tony Bourke - delisted Damien Lock - delisted Craig Black - delisted John Hynes - delisted Ben Thompson - delisted On: Stephen O'Reilly (Fremantle). The usual Carlton routine, giving away early draft picks for proven players rather than punting on youth. 27-year-old key defender O'Reilly is a good player when fit - he's a history of hamstring trouble. Michael Mansfield (Geelong). Tough, experienced bloke who was dropped for the first time in his 10-year, 181-game career last season. Geelong's best player in their 94 and 95 GF losses, the second against the Blues. Played mostly as a half-back flank but no stranger to the forward line. Richard Kelly (Perth). The Blues' first draft selection at no. 60. But they expressed pleasure in getting Kelly, a hard-working centreman who's already played senior footy in the Westar despite being just 17. What else are they gunna say - "Bah, all we ended up with was this dud." Ryan Houlihan (Tatura). Also 17, a speedy half-forward/midfielder. Older brother Adam is at Geelong and even older brother Damian played for North and Collingwood. Jeremy Dukes (Prahran Dragons). Another 17-year-old, a high-leaping forward. Trent Hotton (East Burwood). Key forward hampered by injury at Collingwood, where he played 17 games from 1994-96. Sacked pre-19997 season after being involved in a drunken punch-up with teammates, later accused of leaking the Pies' "play-book" to other clubs, he's consistently denied it. Useful Ansett Cup appearances. Andrew Merrington (St. Bernards). Carlton had three draft picks in the 90s. Number 90 is a tall key position player who played in the Blue reserves in 1998. Adam Matthews (Murray Bushrangers). Pick no. 92, a very athletic teenage CHF who's also played in the ruck. Joseph Allen (Garfield). The last player taken in the October draft at no. 93, Allen is a speedy flanker who can kick it a mile, by all accounts. Collingwood Off: Alex McDonald - retired Lee Walker - retired Damian Monkhorst - delisted. Pre-season drafted by Saints. Clinton King - traded to Richmond for McKee and their no. 7 draft pick. Andrew Schauble - traded to Sydney for Mark Kinnear, who walked out pre-season Jamie Tape - delisted Jason Wild - delisted Cameron Venables - delisted Scott Crow - delisted Brad Fuller - delisted. On Bulldogs' rookie list. Luke Godden - delisted Frank Raso - delisted On: Steven McKee (Richmond). Ruckman who's shown some promise in his 20 games to date. Many Pie supporters unhappy about trading King for him, though. Andrew Ukovic (Essendon). Rangy, speedy player who started career as a winger (like they all do at Essendon), but picked up three Brownlow votes last year for a game at full back. Wanted to leave Bombers for a regular game. Joshua Fraser (Murray Bushrangers). The usual, much-hyped no. 1 draft pick, a 202 cm, 18-y-o ruckman with extraordinary agility for his size. President Eddie paraded Fraser on The Footy Show as long ago as July. Clearly he'd instructed the team to win the spoon. Danny Roach (Tassie Mariners). First-round draft pick (no. 7), at 17 years of age a tall, thin key defender upon whom most clubs were very keen. I remember another Roach who came across from Tassie...Stephen. Rhyce Shaw (Preston). The dynasty continues with Ray's son, a quick, silky winger. But what's with the lad's christian name, Ray? Leon Davis (Perth). Small but speedy forward who impressed pre-season. Ben Johnson (Preston Knights). Not the 'roided-up former Olympic sprinter, but a left-footed midfielder from the northern suburbs of Melbourne. Dale Baynes (East Fremantle). Big wraps on this 18-year-old key forward, good body and big leap. Nicholas Stone (Prahran Dragons). A CHB, but at 192 cm and just 74 kg, he'd be a way off senior footy yet, you'd think. Michael Clark (Fremantle). A key forward who struggled in last season's rare appearances for the Dockers, although he had injury troubles. Shane O'Bree (Brisbane). Pre-season draftee. Solid, shaggy-haired half-forward who quit the Lions, citing homesickness. Played in 2 seasons, a useful type. Simon Hawking (Sydney). One of the "expendable eight" taken from Fitzroy in their absorption into Brisbane, lasted a year there and then just the one with the Swans before being dumped at the end of '98. Tallish bloke who's shown some ability. Essendon Off: Ben Doolan - retired Andrew Ukovic - traded to Collingwood for a draft pick. Barry Young - delisted after Bombers refused salary ask. Pre-season drafted by Hawks. Peter Somerville - delisted Matthew Banks - delisted Jordan Doering - delisted. On Blues' rookie list. Michael Symons - delisted On: Jonathon Robran (Hawthorn). Gawky big bloke - not unlike his brother Matthew at Adelaide - who's played mostly at CHB. Struggled for a game last year at Hawthorn with the emergence of Croad and Hay. David Hille (Dandenong Stingrays). The Bombers were banned from the first two rounds of the draft because of their salary-cap violations. Hille, an 18-y-o former volleyball star recently converted to footy (he's a ruckman), was their first pick at no. 40. They were pleased to get him. Marcus Pickett (Port Adelaide (SANFL)). The younger brother of North hard man Byron and looks exactly like him, if a bit smaller. Described as a raw-but-talented running defender. John Barnes (Geelong). Eyebrows shot up when Sheeds called out Barnsey as pick no. 59. A bitter Barnes left the Dons in 1992, giving Sheedy a fair spray on the way out. Sheeds explained that the Dons needed a ruckman. And Barnesy lives around the corner from Windy Hill. Robert Forster-King (Murray Bushrangers). Left-footed 17-year-old winger/flanker with some wraps. Footscray Off: Nicky Winmar - retired Brett Montgomery - traded to Port Adelaide for Eagleton and a draft pick Michael Martin - traded to Brisbane for Bartlett Stephen Powell - traded to Melbourne for a draft pick Leon Cameron - traded to Richmond for a draft pick James Cook - delisted. Pre-season drafted by Melbourne. Anthony Aloi - delisted Robert Stevenson - delisted Daniel Wulf - delisted On: Nathan Eagleton (Port Adelaide). Speedy goal-kicking forward flanker with lovely left foot. Underwent surgery for irregular heartbeat last year. Played well in Ansett Cup. Trent Bartlett (Brisbane). Tasmanian big man with broad shoulders, has shown glimpses of ability but also had plenty of injuries in his 5-year, 39-game career to date. Robert Murphy (Gippsland Power). The Dogs ended up with plenty of draft picks after their cleanout. Murphy was their first-round selection (no. 13), a 17-year-old utility who weighs just 68kg. Daniel Giansiracusa (Western Jets). A pity Jack Dyer isn't about to wrap his tongue around this local boy's name. A classy 17-y-o winger who kicked plenty of goals for the Western Jets in the VSFL. Club describe him as a "potential Mark Mercuri". Patrick Wiggins (Glenorchy). Tough, aggressive forward/ruckman from Tasmania. Also fairly quick, they reckon. Mitchell Hahn (Northern Eagles (QAFL)). Strongly built 18-year-old ruck rover from Queensland. Good mark for his decent size (188 cm). Lindsay Gilbee (Eastern Ranges). High-leaping flanker/midfielder who stood out in VSFL competition. Patrick Bowden (Rovers (NT)). A skinny key forward who played for the NT during the U18 champs. Younger brother of Richmond's Joel, dad Michael also played for the Tiges. Ryan Hargrave (Perth). An 18-year-old key position player. Father Steve also played for the Bulldogs, but had problems with injury. Andrew Wills (Fremantle). Very speedy egghead winger dumped by Freo, who lost patience with his erratic form. Geelong did likewise before them. The player who epitomises the phrase "on his day". Fremantle Off: Andrew McGovern - retired Stephen O'Reilly - traded to Carlton for draft picks Chris Bond - delisted Andrew Wills - delisted. Pre-season drafted by Bulldogs. Peter Mann - delisted Stuart Anderson - delisted Michael Brown - delisted Matthew Burton - delisted. Drafted by North Melboune. Michael Clark - delisted. Drafted by Collingwood. Tony Delaney - delisted. Drafted by St. Kilda. Daniel Parker - delisted On: Troy Cook (Sydney). The hand of former Swan assistant coach Drummy. Cook is a tough rover who experienced a poor, injury-hampered 1999 following two good seasons. Swans recruited him from Perth. Troy Longmuir (Melbourne). Homesick sandgroper who asked the Dees to trade him to the Dockers, enabling him to join brother Justin. Tallish forward flanker who's shown some ability with the Demons, including a liking for the big grab. Brendan Fewster (West Coast). High-leaping forward whom Malthouse pressed into service as a ruckman last year. Paul Hasleby (East Fremantle). Freo's priority no. 2 draft pick. Hasleby is a very highly-rated centreman who won the Larke Medal for best WA player at the U18 champs. Proved a ball-magnet in the Ansett Cup and should be a regular this season. Matthew Pavlich (Woodville/West Torrens). No. 4 draft pick, a17-year-old CHF who represented the SANFL against the VFL last season, booting 3 goals in the croweaters’ win. Also showed some ability in the Ansett Cup. Leigh Brown (Gippsland Power). Big wraps for the Dockers' third draft pick in the first five (no. 5), a mobile CHB or ruckman. Played for Australia v Ireland in junior hybrid rules team. Adam Butler (Murray Bushrangers). Pacy, agile 17-y-o defender who also represented Aust. v Ire. Ben Cunningham (Claremont). Speedy small man who goes in hard. Impressed at draft camp in "agility" tests. Brad Bootsma (South Fremantle). Pre-season draftee, a lithe, running defender in the John Blakey mould. Won South Fremantle's B&F last year. Geelong Off: Leigh Colbert - quit, traded to North for Mooney and the Roos' first three draft picks. Michael Mansfield - traded to Carlton for their second-round draft pick. John Barnes - delisted. Drafted by Essendon. Scott Bamford - delisted Brett Spinks - delisted Cameron Roberts - delisted Leigh Brockman - delisted. Rookie-drafted by Sydney. Tim Finocchiaro - delisted Justin Wood - delisted. On Bulldogs' rookie list. On: Cameron Mooney (North Melbourne). Joins his brother Jason at the Cats. Like him, Cameron's a strong-marking key forward with a bit of promise. Sat on the bench for most of 99 Grand Final. Pubic bone inflammation (similar to Richmond's Mark Merenda) has placed immediate future in jeopardy. Joel Corey (East Perth). The Cats ended up with 6 draft picks in the first 40, thanks to the Colbert and Mansfield trades. Corey was a first-round pick (no. 8), a stat-gathering midfielder/back flanker and All-Australian U18. David Spriggs (Beaumaris). Also a first-round pick (15). Speedy rover who attracted plenty of attention at the draft camp with very high scores on endurance tests, a key indicator of ability to play on the ball. Ezra Bray (St. Mary's (NT)). Pacy 17-y-o on-baller who can kick with either foot - making him amphibious (J. Dyer). Daniel Foster (Port Adelaide (SANFL)). Another 17-y-o, a key position player. Paul Chapman (Calder Cannons). Aggressive, hard-running winger/midfielder. Cameron Ling (Geelong Falcons). Well-regarded local boy, a successful full-forward for the Geelong Falcons in the VSFL. Corey Enright (Port Adelaide (SANFL)). Tallish ruck-rover with good skills and play-reading ability. Danny O'Brien (Gippsland Power). Late promotion from rookie list after pre-season injuries to Woolnough and Cameron Mooney. O'Brien's a quick, goal-kicking small man who impressed pre-season. Hawthorn Off: Jonathon Robran - traded to Essendon for a draft pick. Marcus Baldwin - delisted. On Geelong's rookie list. Hayden Burgiel - delisted Jason Daniltchenko - delisted Matthew Dennis - delisted Jon Hassall - delisted Brad Lloyd - delisted Nathan Turvey - delisted On: Lance Picioane (Adelaide). Camrys' first-round draft pick in 1997, a rover who played four games in 1998 but none last season. From Essendon Grammar originally. Luke McPharlin (East Fremantle). Judge may be gone but perhaps this surprise no. 10 draft pick was a legacy of his. McPharlin played just one game for the East Freo U18s, under an assumed name, in which he booted 8 goals. He's a big bloke (194cm). Brett Johnson (Swan Districts). Hard-working 17-y-o centreman, maybe a bit small yet. Tim Clarke (Geelong College). Son of former Geelong champion David, he knocked back the chance to join brother David Jr. at Kardinia Park and entered the draft. Very light (65kg). Australian junior champion in athletics (2000m steeplechase). Chance Bateman (Perth). Talented 18-y-o winger who's played senior footy in the Westar. Christian name provoked a series of woeful puns from Ch7 commentators in Ansett Cup - "He's a chance to score here", etc. Timothy Hazell (Tassie Mariners). Strong-marking forward flanker. Bill Nicholls (Geelong Falcons). Tall (187 cm) flanker type who "works well in traffic", it says here. Barry Young (Essendon). Pre-season draftee. Tough 29-y-o utility who failed to come to terms with the Dons, Hawks deny he's being paid a fortune. 129 games for 68 goals, coming off his best season. Melbourne Off: Garry Lyon - retired. On Dees' coaching staff. Todd Viney - retired Glenn Lovett - retired Matthew Bishop - traded to Port Adelaide for a draft pick. Troy Longmuir - traded to Fremantle for a draft pick. Mark Bradly - demoted to rookie list. Darren Kowal - delisted Nick Carter - delisted Donald Cockatoo-Collins - delisted Craig Smoker - delisted On: Stephen Powell (Footscray). Left-footed on-baller who had a very good 1999, perhaps paid the price for a quiet finals series in being dumped by Dogs. Kicks the odd goal. Brad Green (Tassie Mariners). The sort of kid you hated at school. Green has played junior cricket for Australia and trialled with numerous soccer clubs including Manchester United before settling on footy. I suppose we should be thankful. Was 19th pick in the draft. Paul Wheatley (Preston Knights). Hard-working key position player, a good mark who can play at either end. Given Barassi's no. 31. Michael Clark (Eastern Ranges). Quick backman who can also play on-ball. Dad Denis played 160 games for Melbourne. Matthew Whelan (Darwin). Strong 20-year-old backman who was a regular for Woodville/West Torrens in the SANFL last year. Chance to debut in round 1. Shannon O'Brien (Gippsland Power). Speedy 17-y-o forward pocket/flanker who has some growing to do before senior ranks beckon. Cameron Bruce (Melbourne High School OB). Older draftee (20), tall, skinny bloke who's been on the Dees' supp. list for the last two seasons. Did a bit pre-season. James Cook (Footscray). After a tough year, the Dees ended with three picks in the pre-season draft. First was this formerly tubby, now slimmer spearhead who enjoyed two good years with the Dogs before a Barry Crocker last year. Stephen Pitt (Norwood). Forward flanker who distinguished himself by continually getting in the way of Sav Rocca during two seasons with the Pies. Simon Godfrey (Box Hill/supp. list). Strongly-built 19-year-old midfielder. North Melbourne Off: Mark Roberts - retired John Longmire - retired Brett Allison - quit when offered reduced contract. Drafted by Sydney. Cameron Mooney - traded to Geelong for Colbert Scott Welsh - traded to Adelaide, part of Colbert deal Anthony Mellington - delisted Paul McMahon - delisted Dion Miles - delisted Daniel Stevens - delisted On: Leigh Colbert (Geelong). To get Colbert, the Roos gave away two 99 Premiership players (albeit fringe ones) and their first four draft picks in a huge deal involving four clubs. At his best, the former Cat skipper is very good and capable of playing just about anywhere. How he recovers from last years' knee reconstruction and later walkout on the Cats are the immediate questions. Slow start in Ansett Cup. David Calthorpe (Brisbane). Arrives via the Colbert deal, slimmed-down centreman who did 7 seasons with the Bombers but struggled to get selected for the Lions last year. Clayton Lasscock (West Perth). The Roos' first draft pick at no. 53, a 20-year-old running defender likened to David King. Mark Ainley (Beaumaris). Lightly-built 17-y-o midfielder/back flanker who gets plenty of touches. Matthew Burton (Fremantle). Big ol' Spider joins former Docker teammates Bell, Abraham and Dhurrkay at the Kangas. Recruited as cover for injury-prone pair McKernan and Capuano. Many thought Monkhorst was going to be the one. Lindsay Smith (Glenelg). Also a ruckman but at 19, ten years younger than Burton. Mobile with good endurance - also unlike Burton. Troy Makepeace (Moe/supp. list). Midfielder, won Roo reserves' best-and-fairest in 1999. Christian Woodley (Subiaco). Isn't he in The Seekers? Speedy, long-kicking half-back. Port Adelaide Off: Darryl Poole - retired Nathan Eagleton - traded to Footscray for Montgomery and a draft pick Chris Naish - delisted Shayne Breuer - delisted Tom Carr - demoted to rookie list. Brett Chalmers - delisted Nigel Fiegert - delisted On: Brett Montgomery (Footscray). Wing/forward flanker who racked up possessions with the Dogs. Also has penchant for speccies. Scapegoat for Bulldogs' poor 99 finals series, in which he did very little, but handy perfomer in this years’ Ansett Cup. Matthew Bishop (Melbourne). Agile tall bloke usually employed as a key defender by the Dees. Paul Koulouriotis (Gippsland Power). First-round draft pick (no. 12), an aggressive and exciting on-baller who won All-Australian selection at U18 level. Cain Ackland (Port Adelaide (SANFL)). 17-y-o ruckman/forward who was one of the fastest players at the draft camp - and he's 196 cm. Brent Guerra (Bendigo Pioneers). Tough, goal-kicking 17-y-o midfielder who also won All-Australian honours at U18 championships. Steven Brosnan (Port Adelaide (SANFL)). Strong-marking forward, if a little on the short side for a key spot. Did well in AC. Like all croweaters, he's a terrible haircut. Wade Chapman (Sydney). Pre-season drafted. Gutsy midfielder whose progress has been impeded by injury. Richmond Off: Justin Plapp - traded to the Saints for a draft selection. Steven McKee - traded to Collingwood for King and their no. 3 draft pick. Ashley Blurton - delisted Ross Funcke - delisted Paul Greenham - delisted Ben Hollands - delisted Ben Moore - delisted Jason Ramsey - delisted On: Leon Cameron (Footscray). Loping, long-kicking wingman who became part of Plough's cleanout. Tiges plan to use him as the defensive-rebound man, if the AC was any guide. Played 172 games in 10 seasons with the Dogs. Clinton King (Collingwood). Useful, skinny rover now at his third club. Handballs a lot as he can't kick over a jam tin. Did well for the Pies but they needed a ruckman so traded for McKee. Aaron Fiora (Port Adelaide (SANFL)). A highly-rated 18-y-o, left-footed winger (oh good, we're short on those) who attracted strong interest from most clubs. Taken at no. 3 in the draft. Ezra Poyas (Prahran Dragons). Ambitious bloke allegedly quoted as saying "I'm going to play 200 games and win a Brownlow". Forward flanker who captained Vic Metro in the U18 championships and won All-Australian selection. Scott Homewood (Eastern Ranges). Tall bloke who's played as a key forward, was the sixth-fastest sprinter at draft camp - not bad for 190 cm. Like Justin Charles, has played baseball for Australia. Andrew Mills (Murray Bushrangers). Also a forward but at just on 6 ft., more of a flanker-type. Recent operation on wrist could hamper his progress this year. Ty Zantuck (Western Jets). Son of former South, North and just plain Melbourne player Shane, he's a solid 186 cm half-back. Played for Vic Metro at U18 championships. St. Kilda Off: Luke Beveridge - retired Tony Francis - retired Daniel Healy - delisted Jacob Anstey - delisted Glen Coghlan - delisted Brett Cook - delisted Brad Campbell - delisted Brent Cowell - delisted. Rookie-drafted by Geelong. On: Justin Plapp (Richmond). Talented marking forward who kicked 8 goals in his first two games, but the Tiges couldn't fit him into a forward line full of big galoots. Handy back-up (or replacement) for Heatley. Caydn Beetham (Oakleigh Chargers). First-round draft pick, ninth overall. Just 17 but ranked very highly for speed and strength at draft camp, viewed by all as an outstanding on-ball prospect. Much comparison to Shane Crawford. Jason Blake (Beaumaris). Under18 All-Australian key defender, has big leap. Murray Pitts (Beaumaris/Supp. list). A 21-year-old, regular full-back for the reserves in 1999. Saints' best in their losing reserves GF team. Tony Delaney (Fremantle). Good midfielder who has had a shocking run with injury, playing just 43 games in 7 seasons. Essendon traded him to get Matthew Lloyd in 1993. Played all three of the Saints' AC games and did alright, too. Fred Campbell (Sydney). Saints also had three picks in the pre-season draft. First pick was used to get this quick teenage winger who quit the Swans just weeks before, citing family reasons. Strange. Damian Monkhorst (Collingwood). Monky trained his considerable arse off to get on the Saints' list and had a good Ansett Cup, rucking entire games. Back-up for Everitt. Sean Charles (Carlton). The surprise of the pre-season draft, Stakilda taking a punt on the very talented, but luckless and unreliable Charles. Contract is very heavily performance-based. Sydney Off: Tony Lockett - retired Mark Kinnear - traded to Collingwood for Schauble, then walked out on Pies. Stefan Carey - traded to Brisbane for a draft pick. Troy Cook - traded to Fremantle for a draft pick. Fred Campbell - quit for personal reasons. Pre-season drafted by St. Kilda. Jason McPherson - delisted Brett Rose - delisted Wade Chapman - delisted. Pre-season drafted by Port Adelaide. Will Sangster - delisted On: Jason Ball (West Coast). Decent key forward/ruckman who's had his share of injuries. Part of the effort to plug the Plugger gap. Andrew Schauble (Collingwood). Key position player, used mainly at CHB by the Pies. Showed some promise in his early seasons (debuted 1995) but gone backwards over the last couple. When you can't get a regular game with the wooden spooners... Scott Stevens (Perth). Not much known about this 17-y-o forward flanker, the Swans' first draft pick at no. 21. Stephen Doyle (South Adelaide). A father-son draftee, Stephen's dad played for South Melbourne. Highly rated young ruckman whom most believe would have gone in the first 10 picks (he was no. 26, pre-selected under the father-son rule). Ryan O'Keefe (Calder Cannons). Physically mature 18-y-o defensive flanker, Swans expect him to play this season. Brett Allison (North Melbourne). Veteran forward (he's 31 and played 219 games) given another chance in the wake of Plugger's retirement. The Roos tried to trade him to Sydney for Shannon Grant two years ago, but Allison refused to move. Now he's more than happy to. Ben Fixter (Coolabon). Pre-season draftee, a speedy flanker much likened to Paul Kelly (the footballer). West Coast Off: Chris Waterman - retired Brett Heady - retired Chris Mainwaring - retired Jason Ball - traded to the Swans for a draft pick Brendan Fewster - traded to the Dockers for a draft pick. On: Darren Glass (Perth). As usual the Weagles traded for early draft picks. They went for big blokes after discarding Fewster and Ball. Glass, picked at no. 11, is a classy CHB who has played senior footy in the Westar and was an U18 All-Australian. Looked OK in Ansett Cup. Travis Gaspar (South Fremantle). The third of the Gaspar boys to be drafted, a first round selection (14) who is a key position player. Let's hope he can kick better than Darren. David Haynes (North Warrnambool). The final first-round selection, also quite tall (188 cm) but more of a wing/flanker type. Had a run in Ansett Cup. Adam Hunter (Swan Districts). Another 188 cm bloke, played as a key forward. Also played senior Westar footy last season and AC matches this year. Kane Munro (Bendigo Pioneers). A 17-y-o winger/rover with decent skills. Cheers, Tim. E-mail: t.murphy@rmit.edu.au |
