The mighty Southport
Sharks lived up to expectations when they comprehensively won
their third straight premiership title at Coorparoo against the
Northern Eagles. Not since the unbeatable Windsor side of 1949-51
has a side been able to not only win three flags in a row, but
dominate the competition so totally, especially going through
the 1999 season undefeated. The senior side has now not lost
a game since June 1998, and judging by player ages and the reserves
performances, one has to wonder when they will finally lose another
senior match. Additionally, they comfortably took out the reserves
flag against Morningside, possibly justifying the clubs' push
to join a higher league (in particular the AFL or secondly the
SANFL).
The powerhouse Sharks
outfit only had a 15-point buffer at the main break, (the Zillmere
lads going goal-for-goal with the unbackable favourites early),
before riding rough-shod over a game Eagles side in the second
half. In this regard, this match was a carbon-copy of the two
regular season and semi-final matches between the two clubs.
There were no punches pulled from the outset, both clubs going
at it hard but clean. The rivalry between these clubs has been
well documented over the years, (three grand finals and annual
semi-finals) and after the two coaches had to be physically separated
at half-time during the major semi-final a fortnight ago, there
would be no love lost on a blustery grand final day.
Sharks midfielders
David Bain and Shaun Ballans (who was awarded the Joe Grant medal
for best afield) were devastating, and dominated the midfield
while spearhead Tim Deacon kicked six majors, including all four
"sausage-rolls" in the last quarter. The Eagles started
promisingly with Brisbane Lion Danny Dickfos giving his side
a focal-point at centre-half forward, during which time the score
see-sawed during the first two terms. In the second half, Sharks
defender Troy Crossley negated Dickfos' impact, and played a
dominant role in defence.
The damage was done
during the second term when Southport kicked four goals to two,
and key Eagles players went "missing" for a five minute
period dominated by the "black & whites". The paint
was blistering from the walls in the sheds during Eagles' coach
Craig Brittain's halftime "chat", but it was to no
avail as the Sharks went up another gear that the Eagles couldn't
follow, kicking a further four goals to the Eagles' solitary
point. Honours were shared in the final term, but the match was
over, Southport happy to just run the last quarter down and take
yet another title.
The win capped a terrific
season for Sharks' skipper David Bain, the former Brisbane Bears
and Fitzroy player, who had also picked up his second Grogan
Medal a fortnight ago as equal best-and-fairest player in the
competition (along with Brad Jones from Mt. Gravatt).
The Sharks trophy cabinet
is now nothing short of overflowing with silverware. Since their
admission to the QSFL in 1983 from the Gold Coast league, they
have won nine senior premierships, finished runner-up a further
four times, won numerous pre-season titles, and taken out many
reserves and colts (U/19) premierships. They have never missed
qualifying for the semi-finals, and judging by the weekend's
performances, aren't about to relinquish their mantle as arguably
the most dominant side in Queensland football history.
