Welcome back everybody
to the weekly QSFL footy write-up, and what a week in footy it
was
. now, where have I heard that before ??? At last a
fine week-end, but unfortunately for me, the "outlaws"
are down visiting from Hervey Bay, so
. so much for footy
!!!! Even though, it was a magnificent couple of days, and club
groundsmen must now be ripping their hair out with practically
every oval now being shagged following the big wet. Only the
Gabba (believe it or not) seems to have survived relatively intact,
and perhaps the same could be said for Brisbane Lions footy park
(the old Coorparoo field)
Anyway, the big news
of the week HAS to be the mighty 'Roos from Maroochydore causing
the boilover of the season when they steamrolled the Cubs in
the re-scheduled match at Zillmere, and record their first win
of the year. It was no doubt a huge trip back up the coast, and
an even bigger night back at the club for the Roo-boys after
a deserved victory over a youthful but lack-lustre Cubs outfit.
The match proved to be a see-sawing affair in the first half
with the scores locked at the big break. It was a different story
in the second though when the Cubs somewhat dropped their bundle
following three quick Roo goals in the third session. Congratulations
to everyone associated with the Roos for finally breaking their
duck. It must now be considered a very real possibility that
the Cubs could miss the finals, with numerous injuries to Lions'
players causing regular call-ups. McKinnon and Handley bagged
four each for the Roos, with Headland slotting four for the Cubs.
Maroochy's best included Scott, Handley, Clarke, Vagg and Michael.
Cubs' Knobel, Doherty, Kenna and Bolton also played well.
It was also a welcome
return to form for the defending premiers as they pounded a hapless
Mounties outfit into the ground by 14 goals, after an inauspicious
start on Sunday. Trailing by two goals at the first break, the
Sharks piled on six in the second while keeping Mounties goal-less.
It was then shut-the-gate as Southport then slotted eight more
in the third to a yet-again goal-less Vultures. Goal-sneaks Mackay,
Deacon and Coughlan bagged six, five and four respectively for
the black-&-whites while Grayson was the only multiple goal-kicker
for the Klumpp Road boys. Performers on the day included Coughlan,
Deacon, McCluckie, Stevens and Hayes-Dewar for Southport, with
James, Dupuy and Jones the only Mounties guaranteed of holding
their spots in the top side next week.
The Mayne Tigers are
determined to prove that their season is not yet over, after
registering a 54-point demolition of the Cats. The win was even
more meritorious given the match was played at Broadbeach, while
Broady are also in the hunt with a slim finals chance. 1999 is
also Mayne's best season in some years, this being their sixth
scalp. The match could never be described as an "exhibition",
but a five-goal to nil burst in the first quarter certainly laid
the foundations. It was a tight and scrappy second term, but
the Tige's four goals in the third sealed a much-needed Mayne
victory. The last quarter was easily the most entertaining as
both sides traded blows in a goal-a-thon. Green (4) and Peris
(3) were Mayne's sharp-shooters doing the damage. The Tige's
best included DeBrinni, Smyth, Ryan and the Lynches, while Muir,
Covino, Ellis and Tanis never gave in for the Cats.
Northern Eagles proved
thay will be a force come finals time following their 55-point,
come-from-behind pasting of Labrador. The Tigers kicked five
goals to two in the opening term, only to be outclassed and outplayed
in every department for the remainder of the match. Labrador
had no answer to the Eagles' running game, and must now be considered
as only "making up numbers" when the big games start
in a few weeks. Sharp-shooter Robbie Williamson bagged three
more, along with Watts, for the Zillmere boys, while Gowers was
the only multiple scorer for the Tigers. The day's best included
Reeves, Watts, Hahn, Weller and Morrison for the Eagles, while
Osborne, Lamb, Fair, Browne and Bartlett tried hard for the coast
boys.
Other News
Another reminder:
The Mayne Tigers Football
Club are holding a 75th year anniversary and re-union function
on Saturday 7th August (
. this Saturday). Festivities will
commence at 1:00pm at the Kedron Oval (Sixth Avenue, Kedron)
where a special area will be set aside for past players and supporters
to cheer on the Tige's for their home game against Morningside
that day.
A smorgasbord dinner
will follow the game at 7:30pm at the adjoining club with a cost
of $20 per head. It will be a great opportunity for old friends
and players who have been involved with the famous club to renew
acquaintances. Reforming the "Old Boys" will be a topic
for discussion, and Mayne's "Team of the Century" will
be announced. All "old" Tigers are asked to contact
organising chairman Barry Coghill on 3263 6885 or president Murdoch
Campbell on 3857 1404
. Mobile 0418 181 200.
In other news, plans
for the old Western Districts - cum - West Brisbane Bulldogs
club have been revealed, with the proposal being a multi-sport
recreation club being constructed on the current club-house site.
As the Western Magpies headquarters is right next door, it is
not envisaged that a senior club will play out of Chelmer ever
again, although the Western Taipans (under-18's) are currently
based there. Talk of baseball, softball, touch football and cricket
abounds, with a fully-licensed multi-purpose recreational facility.
It will be the end of an era when footy ceases to be played at
Chelmer, with its roots going back to early this century with
the original Taringa Football club. Farewell Chelmer
.
Next Week
Round 16 is the third
last week of fixtures and sees some interesting match-ups. At
Klumpp Road a shattered Vultures take on Broadbeach, cellar-dwellers
Maroochydore make the three-hour trip down to Southport, Morningside
cross the river to battle with Mayne, and the Northern Eagles
host the Lion Cubs. Labrador get a very unwanted bye.
Higgsy's Hints
Both Mounties and Broady
come off heavy losses in round 15, and I expect the Vultures
to hit the Cats with all guns blazing as they are trying to tie
up a top-three berth with one game and a bye after this
.
Mounties by six goals. Top plays bottom at Fankhauser Reserve
and although the Roos have found new confidence, I can't go past
unbeaten Southport
. Sharks by twelve goals conservatively.
No love lost here in the battle of the big cats
. this
could be a tight one, but I think Mayne will want it more. Tige's
by two goals. I think the Eagles'-Cubs match is the pick of the
round, with both sides wanting to consolidate spots in the five.
This is a danger game for the Zillmere boys
. Hmmmm
.
Unconfidently I'll go the Eagles by a goal. Labrador will be
ropable that their bye has come now
. Oh well, can't help
bad luck !!!
Three out of four yet
again gives me 47/60 for the season. I correctly picked Mayne
as a roughie, and just wish I could produce this form regularly
in the $$$$$$$ AFL Footypix comp !!!
AFL Footypix Tipping
Competition
I thought I had a shocker
only picking 4 this week, but once I saw some other scores, I
certainly breathed a sigh of relief. Even Chaddo only got 4,
leaving me yet second again only 4 behind on 94. Big news was
Macca's 7/8, netting him the $275
. Bastard
.
Big movers this week
were Macca (+6) and Di Hoopmann (+5), and Schultzy (ooohhh!),
Jim Anderson and Scotty Bool all dropping six spots. Not too
much changed in the top ten places, these being as follows with
four rounds to go :-
