QSFL Respresentative Match (10 July 1999)

** No Premier Division Matches played due to rep game **

Queensland State Football League vs Victorian Metropolitan Football League
Brisbane Lions Football Park

Background

The VMFL is the governing body for suburban football in the metropolitan area, and represents the interests of 11 separate leagues including Diamond Valley, Eastern, Essendon, Footscray, Riddell and Southern football leagues. This match is also only the third occasion in which a combined representative side from these leagues has taken the field. Back in the mid-80's they were defeated by the Victorian Country Football League , and last year defeated Queensland by 12-15-87 to 8-10-58 at the Gabba. This side comprises the best players from the Queen's Birthday weekend VMFL carnival in Melbourne, and has been in training for this match for six weeks.

The Q.S.F.L. is the governing body of the code in Queensland, and represents the interests of anyone who has ever picked up a footy and had a kick in the Sunshine state. At the senior level, the standard is certainly high, especially for a game that is, for all intents and purposes, only amateur, caused by the fact that Australian Football is the least played and followed code in Queensland. This means that the desire to play at the highest level (AFL) must be strong, and games like this one must be taken seriously. This state has a long and proud history in the game - over 120 years - and has proved that it can more than match anyone on their day, with victories over Western Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales and Victoria - all strong Aussie Rules states - being registered in the past.

What can I say .... as the scores show .... we didn't win !!! I can honestly say though, that the better (and taller) side won, but the local lads certainly pushed them all the way. Even at the death, the Martin King-coached Queensland side was still battling hard, but were always behind the eight-ball after conceding a four goal start in the first quarter-and-a-half. The conditions didn't suit either, the ground resembling something the Mexicans would be used to. It wasn't so much a quagmire, but the paddock was definitely soft underfoot (and slippery as hell!). However, we've had enough wet weekends in recent weeks to adapt so the conditions can't be blamed, especially as just as many of them as us ended up on their arses throughout the day.

The visitors were certainly pumped and nailed the first sausage-roll after only a minute. From here the centre-square was nothing short of a battle-ground, and rarely did the pill escape into the clear (or the air!) However, the Vic's played the better percentage football, playing keepings-off as much as they could. It wasn't until midway through the second term that the maroons registered their first major (and a quick second), but by this time the Double-Blues (navy and sky to be precise) had poked through four, leaving the locals to play catch-up all day. They never did catch up, but managed to outscore their rivals for the rest of the match.

Hawthorn reject Todd Power, former Richmond player Nick Jewell, Leigh Woods and the 17-year-old Aaron Thege all played magnificently. At times you could even be forgiven for forgetting the conditions were so bad, especially watching Thege's handling in the backline. For Queensland, Damon Lawrence, Daniel Garton, Matt Waters and the mercurial Dean Edwards were standout stars.

Although the visitors had a massive height advantage, and I mean MASSIVE, I would like to have seen this match played on a dry park, and see if the Vic's could contain our crumbers and ball-runners. However .... not to be .... and all accolades deservedly should go to the Southerners.

Oh well, as Collingwood supporters say .... there's always next year ....

Next Week

Hmmmmm .... a very interesting round which should sort out a few ifs-and-buts about a few team's chances of making the five. Firstly, Broady host perennial losers Maroochydore, the Lion Cubs head down the pacific to take on a keen Labrador, the old mid-80's grudge match between the Eagles and Sharks is to be re-visited at Zillmere, Morningside take on fellow Southsiders Mt. Gravatt at Esplen Oval, and Mayne's bye puts paid to their chances of featuring in the semis.

Higgsy's Hints

There was only the rep game played last week .... and I was wrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...... yes, I was wrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Well let's just say that I got none out of one. Oh well, see how I go this week .... This is a must-win for Broady, and they will absolutely lace the Roos at home. Even if it's wet, that'll only save Maroochy a couple of goals !!! The Cubs - Labrador match will be a pointer to how well these two will play in the finals. It's a formality that they'll both make it, but I the Tiges at home by four goals. The Sharks will beat the Eagles at the Eagles' nest, but they'll know they've played after this one. No love lost here, but the Sharks by four goals. The Vultures take on 'Side at a boggy Esplen Oval. Mounties have shown that they don't handle a wet backside too well, but I think they'll fall over the line by default .... (Morningside wouldn't remember how to win, would they ??) Mounties by three goals. Mayne have the bye, and well personally, I think it's nighty-night for ninety-nine !!!!

AFL Footypix Tipping Competition

I said last week to "watch the big fella go" .... This week I'll say watch the big fella fall in a heap and ball !!! 4/8 .... What crap is that ???..... Bloody Essendon ..... bloody St. Kilda .... Bloody West Coast .... Bloody Melbourne .... They all threw their games just to shit me !!!! Anyway, this leaves me now 4 off Chaddo's pace, with the big movers being Trevor Dann up 13, Donny Schultz (the big pansy) up nine and Mark Landgraf up eight places. Big crashes were felt by Dave Fraser who fell 11 places and Di, Moya and Tom all seven.

Umpiring decisions .... that's what it was ......
