Playing for the Lion Cubs yet
again, Alistair Lynch staked his claim for re-inclusion back
into the Lions senior side after a demolition-like performance
against a hapless Broadbeach outfit on Saturday. Kicking a personal
tally of seven goals, Lynch led from the front all day in the
Lion Cubs 58-point drubbing of the Cats. Ably supported by Notting
(4goals), Broadbeach had no answer to the Cubs three 6-goal quarters,
who must now be recognised as a real premiership threat to the
top sides. Best for the Cubs were Lynch, Notting, Rusca (2 goals),
McDonald (2 goals) andPower (1 goal). In a losing side with nine
separate goal-scorers, best were Ellis, Patching, Taylor and
Tanis.
Mt. Gravatt pumped Maroochydore
by 22 goals on Saturday in the biggest thrashing so far this
season. It seems to have become some what of a habit for the
Roos to fade badly for one quarter. Having conceded 41 points
in the first term, Maroochydore battled back gamely in the second
to trail by six goals at the long break. However, they must have
left their boots in the sheds as the Vultures piled on 12 goals
9 behinds in the third term of an 18-10 to 3-4 second half. Dupuy
with nine goals(which should easily have been ten) led the charge
in a side with 12 goal-kickers. Vultures' best were Hope, Dupuy,
Jackson, Harmon and Rankin. For the Roos, Murnane, Carter, Vagg
and the Fishers all tried hard.
At O'Callaghan Park the Eagles
laced a lack-lustre Mayne by 96 points. The trend of the day
was set early with the Eagles kicking three early goals in a
seven goal to two first term. You could put the glasses down
after that - Mayne were never in the hunt - especially after
scoring only a solitary point in the second quarter. They were
then pummelled by a further ten goals in the second half, giving
the Eagles a percentage-boosting victory. The win manages to
keep the Eagles in touchwith the leaders. There were no weak
links in the Eagles' side with Dean, Morrison, Deeth, Czerner
and Waters all stand-outs. The Tigers' best werePearce, Lynch,
Ashlin, DeBrini, McMahon and Smythe who kicked three goals.
Morningside's slump continued
when they were humbled by eight points at Labrador on Sunday.
The Panthers trailed early and were always a couple of goals
behind Labrador, having to play catch-up football all day. This
match was crucial to Morningside's chances of making the semi-finals
(I know it's only early in the season) but they will find it
ever-so-difficult to keep touch with Southport and the like,
from here. Seven goals from Gowers enabled Labrador to keep their
noses in front, andlevel with Southport at the head of the table.
However this will probably change as the Sharks still have a
game in hand. Best for Labrador wereGowers, Lamb, Hutchins, Allen
and Collins. For the Panthers, Edwards, Cowley, Ryan, Doherty
and Tarrant all played well.
Next week's matches see Mt. Gravatt
take on an undefeated Southport at Klumpp Road in what should
be a beauty. The Eagles will head down the Pacific Highway to
take on Labrador while Broadbeach head up to do battle with Mayne
at Windsor Park. The Maroochydore Roos will hop down to the Gabba
to cop what should be no less than a good old-fashioned hiding
at the hands (claws?) of the Lion Cubs. On current form, Morningside
should beat the "bye" but will have to battle hard
!!!
Higgsy's Hints
Get your money on Southport by
a goal, the Eagles by 2, Mayne by 4 goals, and the Lion Cubs "easily"
by 10 !!!
Other News
Strugglers Maroochydore vowed
they had a bright future in the QSFL despitethe hammerings they
have copped this year. Roos football manager PeterMewett said
the club was negotiating with the Maroochydore City Council tojoin
Queensland Cricket and other clubs in a new multi-purpose stadiumnext
year, with their Wises Road ground to be auctioned off by thecouncil.
One of the original Brisbane
Bears and a former Southport Sharks QSFLpremiership coach, Cameron
"Hollywood" O'Brien saw a newspaper article inthe San
Diego Tribune about the local Lions team playing in theCalifornian
Australian Football League competition. He wandered down for
agame and is now earmarked as the next coach.
Cairns is set to host an Ansett
Cup match next season after Ian Collins(GM of the AFL's football
operations) inspected the superbly-lit,25000-seat Football Park
and Cairns' ability to stage matches, lastweekend. Collins said
he could not fault the venue, which appears to havebeaten the
Southport Sharks in the race to stage the match. It isenvisaged
that a Lions match will be played there as the Gabba willtemporarily
be out of commission due to re-surfacing works. However, afinal
decision will be made closer to the release of the year 2000fixture.
AFL Footypix Tipping Competition
Craig Sanderson has stormed to
the lead with a magnificent 7/8 this weekto head the competition
on 45. Craig misses out on the jackpot though, asBill Clarke
also pulled off a 7. Big movers this week are Bill Clarke,Graham
McColm, Mark Landgraf and Wayne Lake who each moved up the laddereight
places, while John Wilkosz continues his slide down the ladder, losing
eleven spots. I managed a casual six, which is somewhat better
thanlast week's four.
