Labrador continued their tumble down the QSFL premiership table with an 11-point loss to Mounties in the gold coast slush on Saturday. In driving rain, a three goal to six points second quarter dominated by Justyn Hope and Troy Easton for the Vultures set up the victory. After their second straight loss, the Tigers have now slipped to fifth, and with a bye next week must surely be feeling the pinch. Best for Mounties were Hope, Easton, Lanyon, McKinnon and Harmon, while Jason Lamb and Brad Firman were standouts for the losers. Donnellan and Martin also tried hard.

The question must now be asked .... who will stand in their way??? Southport continue to sweep all before them with their seventh consecutive victory (in both grades!!!), this time at the expense of Morningside - whom they beat for the 1998 flag. In trying conditions, the Sharks pummelled a hapless Panthers outfit from go-to-whoa, allowing them only a solitary goal in each half. A six goals to one second quarter tore the heart out of Morningside, who only appeared to be there to make up the numbers. Sharks skipper David Bain revelled in the Fankhauser Reserve slop, with full-forward Rod McKay managing just two sausage rolls for the day - taking his season tally to 31. For the Sharks, Ballins, Bain, Watts, Lawrence and Bradley all starred. In a losing side Evans, Gough, Myles and Brad Edwards played well.

The battle-of-the-big-cats between the Lion Cubs and Mayne was held on a relatively dry and hard pitch in Toowoomba - a match designed to generate publicity for the code in the Darling Downs capital, historically a rugby league stronghold. Organisers of the match would no doubt have been disappointed with the poor crowd turnout, but those who did attend saw one of the more open and entertaining matches of the season. A never-say-die Tigers outfit battled to the death against their more fancied rivals - outscoring them through the middle half of the match. Up by 11 points at the final change, the Cubs certainly finished the stronger nailing seven goals to three in the final term. This match augurs well for the Tigers who have some tough matches in the weeks ahead, and are desperately clinging to a slim finals hope. Headland dobbed five goals and McDonald four for the Cubs, while Housego booted seven for the Tigers. McDonald, Picken, Voss and Boulton were the pick of the Cubs, while Robbins, the Lynches, Housego and Bermingham battled all day for Mayne.

In the Zillmere bog, mudlarkers - the Eagles - proved too strong for cellar-dwellers Maroochydore. Sharp-shooter Robbie Williamson bagged four majors, bringing his season tally to within one of the Sharks' McKay. In a steady-as-she-goes performance the Eagles adapted to the quagmire conditions much more successfully than their sunshine coast counter-parts. The third quarter saw a total of four points scored - and only one off the boot. Waters, Watts, Bulley, Cook and Deeth were the Eagles best, with Vagg, Fisher, Olive, Muir and Charles showing plenty of heart for the Roos.

Next Week

Round 9 will see Morningside and Mayne sort out each other's premiership hopes once and for all at Hawthorne Park, a rejuvenated Broadbeach head up from the coast to meet the Vultures at a poor condition Klumpp Road Oval, Southport head up the Bruce to take on the Maroochy boys, all on Saturday. The match of the round between the Lion Cubs and the Eagles will be fought out on Sunday at Giffin Park, Jason Dunstall's old hunting ground in his days at Coorparoo. Labrador have the rest, and must reflect on the fact that they will only be one game clear in fifth after this week.

Higgsy's Hints

Tipping 28/32 so far counts for nothing when looking at the Mayne - Morningside match. This will no doubt be nip-and-tuck all day with perhaps Morningside having the edge at home .... Panthers by three goals. Mounties will make it a long, slow trip home for the Cats .... Vultures by eight goals, and the sky's the limit for Southport's score against the Roos - they will absolutely smash them!!! On Sunday, I think the Cubs at home might be a bit too strong and humble the high-flying Eagles - Cubs by four.

AFL Footypix Tipping Competition

Definitely one of the more interesting week's results. In a round where three or four out of eight would normally have been considered a good score, those who didn't submit tips (and thus receive all away teams) certainly got their money's worth - six away teams came good. Big movers for Round 10 were Johnny Wilkosz (+10) and Tim Hudd (+9) while Mitchell Ross (-11), Norm Jamison (-11), Matty Smith (-9) and Rob Z (-9) all had Barry Crockers. Me, well four keeps me just two off the pace and still in fourth.
