Maroochydore continued their
giant-killing form to the season by all but deatroying Mayne's
finals hopes at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday. A controversial
double-goal at the 27-minute mark of the final term saw the Roos
hit the front for the first time in the match, grabbing a dramatic
one-point win. The Tige's led by 26 points at the final change
and appeared in total control until a final flourish by Roos'
Troy Fisher and Martin McKinnon. Big Dion Scott took control
of the last few centre bounces before some Mayne players suffered
a brain explosion straight after Maroochy kicked a goal. The
ensuing free-kick was also goaled and the match ended before
the ball got back to the centre. The win is a credit to coach
Kevin Venville after blooding ten new players in the latter part
of the season, and employing a difficult-to-penetrate zone defence.
Stunned Tigers coach Cott Corbett watched his side's finals aspirations
disappear with losses to the two bottom sides, but vowed his
side would beat Mounties next week. Only time will tell
.
Labrador clinched their first
finals spot since joining the top league with a hard fought 21-point
win over the Cats at home. Andy Gowers was again the standout
for the Tigers bagging five majors, with Osborne, Lamb, Bartlett
and Donnellon also prominent. Broady trailed by three goals at
the first change and were never able to bridge the gap, despite
numerous positional changes throughout. The Tigers opponent in
the sudden death playoff is as yet unknown, but will most likely
be the struggling Lion Cubs who have the last bye of the season.
It was no more than a stroll
in the park for Southport when they shellacked the Cubs by 93
points at the Gabba. Only wayward kicking in the second half
prevented the Sharks from rattling up a cricket score in what
was a disappointing performance by the finals-bound Cubs. Mackay
with five and Deacon with four did the damage up front, with
Bain, Hayes-Dewar, McCluckie and Bradley all playing star roles.
For the Cubs, only Knobel, Rusca and Bradshaw deserve a mention.
With the bye next week, the Cubs have an anxious wait for the
result of the Mayne-Mounties match to confirm their spot in the
five.
In what must be viewed as a warning
to all clubs come the finals, the Northern Eagles flogged an
inept Morningside outfit at Hawthorne on Saturday by 85 points.
The Panthers put in yet another diabolical performance, after
leading the Eagles by 2 points at the first break. It all augurs
well for the Zillmere boys as they have only have Broady to play
next week before meeting Mounties in the qualifying final in
a fortnight, with the club hitting peak form at the right time
of the season. Robbie Williamson jammed through another seven
sausage rolls to edge him yet again in front of Shark Rod Mackay
on the goal-kicking list. Buchanan, Cook, Howson, Deeth and Watts
deserve much of the credit for the win, with Pearce, Moncur,
Gough and Ryan the pick from the losers.
Other News
The push is now on for the Western
Magpies (First Division) to be promoted to the QSFL for next
season. Although the Maggies aren't travelling too well in first
division, it is very noticable that there is no top-level football
being played in Brisbane's west. Traditionally, the Western Magpies
are known as Sherwood, with Sherwood having played in the then
QAFL from 1983 to 1989, after having dominated what is now known
as the BAFL, for some years. Financial and other troubles saw
an end to this once mighty club some years ago, and it has only
been in the last two years that a senior club has been playing
again. The Sherwood juniors are still a force, but there is no
incentive locally for youngsters to continue past under-18's.
Additionally, the proposed demolition of the old Western Districts/West
Brisbane club and facilities leaves the western suburbs with
no football team other than the Magpies, hence the push to promote.
Interesting!
Next Week
The final round of fixtures before
the finals arrives this week-end with only the Mayne-Mt. Gravatt
game at Kedron the only match with any bearing on the season's
results. Southport host Gold Coast neighbours Labrador, the Eagles
make the trip down the coast to meet Broady, while Morningside
head up the coast to battle with the Roos. All games are on Saturday,
with the only game in Brizzie being Mayne v Mounties. Lion Cubs
have the bye.
Higgsy's Hints
Favourites all the way this week
. The Sharkies will use Labrador as a last training run
before the week off - Southport by eight goals. Same goes for
the Zillmere boys and Broady
. Eagles far too good here
- Eagles by six goals. A much-improved Maroochydore will go hard
against the Panthers, but will fall about
. Let's see
.
Four goals short. For Mayne to pinch the Cubs' spot in the five
they have to beat Mounties and boost their percentage by 6.4%.
This equates to a 98-nil win, or if mounties jag ten goals (60-points)
the Tige's must kick 151 points. Sorry boys
. Too bigga-task
. Mounties by ten goals! The Lion Cubs should keep turning
up to training this week
. They've got fifth sewn up without
a doubt.
Cripes, I went the upset last
week and ended with 2/4
. Last time I try that caper. My
season total lies at 52/68 (76.5%) which isn't too bad I s'pose,
but could be better!
AFL Footypix Tipping Competition
It's certainly going to come
down to the wire this year as I managed to pull one back on Chaddo
up front. This leaves me only three off the pace with two rounds
to go. The way I figure it, if I'm no more than two behind going
into the last round, I reckon I've still got a shot at the title.
Top ten as they stand are Chaddo-109 , Me-106 , Richy Marsden-105
, Phil Amey-the fast finishing Ted Cleary and Huddy-104 , Rob
Z-103 , Brian Waterson and Reg-102 , the two Craigs Jack and
Tom all on 101. As well as this, big-Ted Cleary jagged 8/8 for
the $50 jackpot too
. Bastard!
