The Sharks were given a wake-up
call by Labrador on Saturday, when they trailed by 8 points at
half-time, before six goals by Tim Deacon led them to a comfortable
24-point win at Fankhauser Reserve. Three goals by Rod Mackay
for a season total of 66 gave him the Brisbane Insurance Brokers
goalkicking award, finishing a solitary goal ahead of Eagle Robbie
Williamson. It was plainly obvious the Sharks' minds were focussed
on the finals, as they never got out of third gear all day. Best
in the coast derby were Deacon, McCluckie, Crossley, Ballans
and Wise for Southport, and Gowers, Stevenson, Bartlett, Lamb
and Donnellon for the Tigers.
Giant-killers Maroochydore were
on target for yet another win, until the Panthers showed some
season-lacking form to finally down the Roos by 13 points at
Maroochydore. The Roos led until midway through the third term
where fatigue appeared to take over, and thus ball security and
delivery suffered. Evans led the match-winning charge for the
Panthers with 5 majors. In all, its been a disappointing season
for Morningside, missing their first finals campaign since 1980.
However, the flag is still flying with the "reggies"
finishing third on the ladder. Best on the day were Gough, Tarrant,
Gaunt and Pearce for the 'siders, and Miller, Fisher, McKinnon,
Calthorpe and Smith for Maroochy.
The Vultures turned in a rusty
performance at Kedron against Mayne, winning by 15 points on
the back of a rare "double-goal" in the final term,
the second in successive weeks against the Tige's, after a defender
kicked the ball away in frustration following a Mounties goal.
Mayne's loss takes the heat off the QSFL executive who will hand
down a decision this week on the Tigers protest against the Roos
naming an extra man on their playing list last week and not declaring
interchange players. Too bad
. Mayne, you lost, so it's
all academic now anyway!!! Top goalkicker was Dupuy with 4 for
Mounties. Best on the day were Lanyon, Lynn, Dupuy and Jones
for Mounties, with DeBrinni, Lynch, Pearce and Stone performing
well for the Tige's.
The Northern Eagles tuned up
for the "showdown" with Mounties next week, with an
effortless 44-point thumping of the Cats at Broadbeach. For Broady,
only club pride was at stake, and they put in a solid effort
around the ground all day, but were beaten by a much classier
side. For the Eagles, it was a slightly inauspicious start, but
once the engine fired it was all one-way traffic. Williamson
for the Eagles and Fulton for the Cats both squeezed through
four goals in blustery conditions. Performers were Smith, Benham,
Buchanan, Deeth and Howson for the Zillmere boys, with Covino,
Walsh, Robinson, Russell and Wilkinson playing well for the losers.
Other News
Should the Brisbane Lions play
their home AFL semi-final on either Saturday the 4th or Sunday
the 5th of September, the Premier Division Second Semi-Final
will be played as the curtain-raiser match. This will be confirmed
though, as soon as the AFL makes an official announcement.
Next Week
This week-end sees the commencement
of the finals, all played this Sunday (29/8/99) at Brisbane Lions
Football Park (previously Giffin Park, Coorparoo). The elimination
semi-finals between Labrador and the Lion Cubs in first grade
(12:00), and Mounties and Broady in the "reggies"(9:30am),
with the qualifying semi-finals between Mounties and Eagles in
first grade(2:30pm), and Morningside and Eagles in the "twos"(5:00pm).
As Southport finished minor premiers in both grades, the Sharks
earn the week's rest.
In first division, the second
week of finals sees the Palm Beach-Currumbin Lions take on the
Surfers Paradise Demons in both grades for first passage into
the "granny". Reserves commence at 11:30am with the
seniors at 2:15pm, at Broadbeach Oval.
There's plenty of footy finals
action to be seen throughout South-East Queensland this week-end,
so why not head out to at least one of the "big ones"
on Saturday or Sunday ???
Higgsy's Hints
Tips for this week
. Hmmm,
let's see
. I think Labrador's loss to Southport last week,
and the fact the Lions are travelling so well in the AFL might
be two too-bigger hurdles for the Tige's
. Cubs by five
goals. In the "grudgy"
. And what a beauty this'll
be
. Toss a coin here as the last 16 weeks mean nothing
now
. I think the Zillmere boys might be just a little
too big and fast for Mounties
. Eagles by three goals (but
don't be surprised if they win by more!)
It's been a while, but I managed
to jag 4/4 last week to give me a creditable 56/72 (77.8%) for
the season. I wish I could say the same for the AFL Footypix
!!!
AFL Footypix Tipping Competition
Well there's no nice way to say
it
. I choked !!! Had the !@#$%^& Eagles beaten the
Bulldogs and the !@#$%^& Crows beaten the Power, I would
have only been one solitary point behind Chaddo in the race to
the title with one week to go. However, the bastards lost so
I'm relegated now down to THIRD !!! What a shit! Now I've got
no hope of taking my second title, and only a slim chance of
coming second. But I don't care
. (sniff)
. Its only
fun
. (sob)
. Its not serious
. (boo,hoo)
..
The top ten now are: David Chadwick-117,
Richard Marsden-113, Me-112, Phil Amey & Ted Cleary-111,
Brian Waterson, Rob Z & Huddy-110, Sando, Jack, Richard Sloan
& REG-108. From here, there are 32 others ranging down to
Rob Bowes on 78, who is still battling for "money-back"
last.
This being the final round in
the AFL is also the last weekly jackpot of $50
. See if
I can jag that even! It should be also be pointed out that a
record six 8/8's were recorded last week.
