MAJOR SEMI-FINAL

Northern Eagles 5-3	7-4	8-6	10-7-67
At the Gabba

For the first time that I can recall, a QSFL match went into "extra-time" at Football Park on Sunday, when 100 minutes couldn't separate a slow-starting Mt Gravatt and a plucky Lion Cubs outfit. The end result saw the demise of a courageous Cubs side brimming with Lions talent. The experience gained this season by many of the Cubs' youngsters will certainly put them in good stead for season 2000. Watch out! For Mounties, they will not want to put this performance on the paddock next week against the Eagles …. to many dropped marks and poor handling. The Cubs' start was a shock to all and sundry, banging through three early majors, thus serving notice they meant business. A rough-house second quarter saw Mounties come out on top with the Cubs going into hibernation. Only two points separated the sides at the last change, and a nip-and-tuck final term saw the Vultures flit away some good scoring opportunities once again. An early goal in extra-time was enough to douse the Cubs hopes of victory. For Mounties, Ellis bagged four and Alleway three, with Jones, Dupuy, Tudhope, Misco and Buswell their best. Picken and Headland kicked three each for the Cubs, with Bradshaw, Shattock, Voss, Bolton and Keating all dominant in their roles.

At the Gabba on Saturday night, the Southport Sharks machine rolled into their third consecutive grand final, making it their 13th GF appearance in 17 seasons (Southport being admitted to QSFL in 1983, winning in their maiden season) It was an on-again-off-again performance by the Sharks who only managed to hit the front right on half-time, after a very average first quarter. A six goals to two second term led by Mackay and Deacon up front saw the sharks in front finally and never looked back, kicking eight more goals to three in the second half. A non-contacting raised elbow from Deacon as the half-time siren sounded saw a melee erupt right in front of the "social club", but it soon dissipated. The second half saw the Eagles' ball control and delivery slip away, in particular across the half-back line. On the few occasions they delivered the ball up front they goaled, but couldn't mainain any momentum through a tight Sharks backline. Coach Craig Brittain's fiery three-quarter time speech along with Danny Dickfos' never-say-die effort all over the park weren't enough to lift the Zillmere boys in the final term, and they will have to show much more if they are to prevent the Sharks achieving the first premiership hattrick since the old Windsor club back in 1949-50-51. Mackay with five and Green with three were terrific for Southport, while Smith and Weller bagged two each for the Eagles. Crossley, Balshaw, Bain, Ballans and Mackay were Southport's best, while Watts, Weller, Garton, Smith and Dickfos didn't deserve to be on a losing side.

Next Week

It's the last chance for sides to qualify for the "big one" this Saturday, with the Eagles and Vultures to battle out the seniors, and Eagles and Sharks to fight out the "reggies". Although no confirmation as yet, I assume the seniors match will be played as the curtain-raiser to the Lions-Bulldogs AFL semi-final at the Gabba on Saturday night.

Predictions …. well personally I think both semis will be relatively one-sided with the Eagles to beat Mounties in the "ones" and Southport to beat the Eagles in the "two's".

Other News

Congratulations to Sharks (former Bears and Fitzroy) rover David Bain and Vultures utility Brad Jones who tied on 15 votes to win the 1999 Grogan Medal, the most prestigious award for Australian football in Queensland. As with other states' medals it is voted for on a 3-2-1 basis for the QSFL's best-and-fairest player. It is the second time Bain has won the award, previously taking it back in 1994. For Jones, he has previously been runner-up on two occasions, so I guess its third time lucky. The dual-winners edged out early leader Trent Bartlett-14 (Labrador) Craig Lanyon-13 (Mt Gravatt) and Jason Lamb-12 (Labrador).

AFL Footypix Tipping Competition

The end-of-season drinks night is to be held this Friday night at the Brisbane Lions Social Club commencing at 6:00pm. This proves to be the season highlight for all those who tip footy results like me …. poorly !!! So all Footypix-ters are welcome to come along and celebrate (commiserate?) another season gone. See you there!
