Quick comments:
- well done to Sydney for wasting the number three pick by failing to leave enough room under their salary cap ...
- ... which gave the Bears a windfall pickup in the form of the unexpectedly available Ross Lyon. Watch out for the Bears this year. Seriously.
- Collingwood drafted Brereton one pick before Hawthorn could.
- Richmond (again) confused onlookers by drafting Stuart Wigney from the Crows, and *re*-drafting Mark McQueen for the *second* time.
- West Coast welcomed back Paul Peos (and Jason Spinks?)
- Simon Atkins just scraped in for another season, joining former teammate Doug Hawkins at Fitzroy.
- $100,000 pickups:
- Essendon picked up Mark Fraser, who finally gets to play for his father's club (the club that rejected him as a teenager).
- North grabbed $100,100 boy Keenan Reynolds as a replacement for Peter Mann (lost to Fremantle).
- Carlton selected Matthen Clape. I guess they need another mobile small/medium sized player ... 8-}
- Darren Wheildon ($85,000 price tag), Jim Wynd (fourth in Fitzroy's best and fairest), Anthony Banik (number one draft choice in the
second or third year of the draft), Darren Forsmann, Spiro Malakellis, Brett Sholl, Glen Kilpatrick, and Anthony Darcy were among the players
ignored. Port Adelaide is looking at signing a number of the leftovers with a view to being ready to enter the AFL.
- Peter Daicos decided with one minute to spare to not submit his signed draft application.
- Alan Jackovich, with a bad back and healthy stomach also decided not to apply for the draft. Perhaps after a year of recuperation and
dieting he may be able to play again. Personally, having seen how much better Melbourne's forward line worked last year after he was injured,
I believe you'd have to think twice about wanting him. Of course, since then Melbourne has either lost or given away most of that forward line,
but that's another story.
