Round 2 started off with a night game at Adelaide Oval between Sturt and Norwood. For three and a half quarters the game had everthing with both sides going goal for goal. In the 3rd term Sturt seemed to have a slight edge and led by 20 points at the last break. In the final quarter Norwood hit back and were within 4 points and looked set to take the lead before a revitalised Sturt held them off and in the end easily won the game by 36 points.
It was touted as the battle between the Mac's, Chris McDermott (Norths coach) and Tony McGuiness (Glenelgs new coach). But it was McDermott who left feeling the worst for wear with North being beaten by 51 points and Chris also being reported for swearing at the umpires (he has since been found guilty and fined). In a brilliant first game for the Bays, Crows recruit Lance Picioane stole the show and finished with 27 possesions.
The game at Whyalla between Port and Centrals was a thrilling encounter that ended in controversy. Port played well all day and led 13.4 to Centrals 7.14 going in to the final term. Centrals hit back and gained the lead by 3 points. Then with less than a minute to go Port's Jared Poulten, deep within the pocket, snapped at goal. The ball subsequently hit the post but the umpire signalled a goal and Port ended up winning by 3 points. The official SANFL response to the controversy was that the ball crossed the lined before being blown back into the post. People at the game though were adament that the umpire was well out of position and signalled the goal before the ball went properly through. The game also had another "low" point with the "superstar" himself Scotty Hodges dislocating his shoulder. Initial reports suggest Scotty will miss at least 5 weeks.
It was the Richardson show at Noarlunga Oval with West winning by 61 points over South. The big full forward for the Bloods, Adam Richardson, took 12 marks and kicked 8.6. After the game Michael Taylor (Wests coach) while pleased with the win was dissapointed with his teams use of the ball. South on the other hand lacked height and couldn't find a winning forward.
