Well this weeks round started with a tough game at Norwood Oval. The game itself was a hard affair but it was the send off rule being implemented and a brawl involving spectators and players after the match that caught the headlines. The game started off with North controlling the game before Norwood gained the upper hand and led at the first break. During the first quarter Norwood's McIntosh was reported for tripping and then also reported for charging and subsequently sent off under the sendoff rule. Norwood controlled the rest of the game and looked set for a big before North kicked a few late goals and then were awarded 2 free kicks resulting in goals before the ball was returned to the centre after a point was scored due to some undisciplined play by Norwood defenders.
When the final siren sounded at Norwood Oval the action hadn't finished as a drunk supporter ran onto the field and punched North's Mark Jeffries. This sparked a scuffle as hundreds of supporters rushed into the area and started pushing and shoving players, officials and other supporters. The umpires were also jostled as they left the oval. I will try and post a separate message detailing more of this incident and any outcomes as the SANFL are investigating the matter and police are likely to be called in.
After waiting many years Sturt supporters are now brimming with confidence as Sturt are now sitting on top of the premiership table after beating West. The Blues led all day in what was a tightly fought game and ended up winning by 20 points. Taylor (Wests coach) while disappointed with the loss stated he is not too worried after his teams second loss in two games.
South showed it will not be a push over this year by beating Port at Alberton Oval. In the first quarter Port kicked the first 4 goals and went into the first break with a 9 point lead. In the 2nd quarter South begun to get on top of Port and led by 12 points at half time. After the main break the Maggies then came out firing but South matched their intensity. When Port came to within 3 points in the final quarter and looked set to regain the lead the Panthers stepped up a gear a kicked the next 4 goals to run out winners by 21 points.
At Elizabeth Oval the Eagles despite a slow start showed the Doggies how to play football and scored a good victory over Centrals by 15 points. After the game Centrals coach Peter Jonas couldn't hide his disapointment and stated his side wasn't metally tough. Mark Mickan (Eagles coach) though put the win down to smarter use of the ball by his players.
