Surprisingly, Broadbeach stuck it up their more-fancied rivals to lead for most of the day only to be caught at the last break. From there, they capitulated under enormous Eagles' pressure to be sunk by a couple of goals. The Eagles didn't really impress, although the towel was never tossed. It could be said that the Cats were a tad unlucky as they always appeared to have the loose man. Warren landed three to be the game's leading goal-kicker. Gatron, Deeth, Warren, Dean and Hahn shone for the Eagles, while Foat, Taylor, Schumacher, Crawford and Walsh played well for Broady.

A hungry Vultures outfit annihilated Mayne at Kedron on Saturday. The 75-point drubbing wasn't a game, it was a shame !!! An opening term of nine goals to one set the scene for Mayne to cop another pumping, this time at the hands (talons?) of the Vultures. Dropping marks and lack of support saw Mayne fold to a side chasing a share of second spot. Lynn nailed six for Mount Gravatt while Green banged through four for the Tigers. Rankin, James, Lanyon, Jones and Lynn performed well for Mounties, while Frigo, Dobson, Stone and the Lynch's tried hard all day in a losing side.

Morningside presented Maroochydore with an early-season gift on Saturday .... the wooden spoon, when handing out a 79-point footy lesson at Hawthorne Park. Maroochydore were nothing short of awful against Morningside .... the Panthers showing some of the form which took them to last year's final. Brown was like the rock of Gibraltar kicking six goals in a performance which was inspirational to his teammates. Moncur also battled hard for his three. Wessling, Evans, Myles and Brown were standouts for the Panthers. Certainly no-one shone for the Roos, but I suppose Clarke, Charles and Carter all showed some heart.

What can one say ??? .... the top of the table clash between Southport and Labrador (the toothless tigers?) turned out to be a dud .... a fizzer, maybe. The local derby between these two old sparring partners was all-over-red-rover at the first break as the reigning premiers wacked on 6 goals to nil. (Someone must have forgotten to tell the Tigers to come out swinging when the bell rang.) The only reason I can see for Labrador winning the third term, was that Southport wanted to give them a bit of heart to actually make them turn up for their return match in August. Mackay bagged nine majors in a non-event match-up. Best on the day were Coughlan, Mackay (obviously), Pemberton, Crossley and Mansbridge for the Sharks and Wright, Donnellon, Browne and Baker for the Tigers.

Round 8 sees the Vultures fly south for the winter down to Labrador, and a replay of last year's grand final between the Sharks and Panthers at Fankhauser Reserve is sure to attract some interest, both on Saturday. Maroochydore then head down the Bruce to take on the Zillmere boys at O'Callaghan Park on Sunday, while the Lion Cubs and Mayne head over the range to play in Toowoomba. Broadbeach have earned the rest this week.

Higgsy's Hints

Mt. Gravatt should find Labrador easy pickings - Southport should absolutely bash an under-manned Morningside - the Maroochydore boys should perhaps consider sleeping in and hitting the beach instead of turning up to play the Eagles - and in the battle-of-the-big-cats the Lion Cubs should tear the heart out of Mayne. (I should get stuck into the bookies - my tips this year are now 24 correct out of a possible 28)

AFL Footypix Tipping Competition

As there were no AFL games this weekend due to Vic v SA origin match, a pick-the-score competition was run instead. Congratulations to Jim McArthur whose "nearest-the-pin" prediction of Vic-122 SA-79 only chalked up a difference of 13 points. Bad luck to Matty Smith who managed a solid 17 and Wayne Green was surprisingly close with a 19 .... great efforts !!! (I did okay to pick exactly the mexicans score but was a fair way out with the mass-murderers score !!!)
