Following their five-point humbling
by Mayne on Saturday, perennial finalists Morningside are now
in serious danger of missing the finals altogether for the first
time since 1980. It would also take some investigation to determine
the last time the Tigers actually rolled the Panthers in a premiership
match. In a heart-stopping display, Morningside effectively lost
the game in the "premiership" quarter when they conceded
six goals to one. Teenage rover Steve Kenna and robust centre-half
forward Brad Edwards led a spirited Panthers fight-back in the
final term, almost overhauling the 36-point deficit, but fell
agonisingly short. For Mayne, Housego nailed five and DeBrinni
four, with Lynch, Ashlin and Dobson their best. Ryan with three,
Kenna, Edwards, Gough and Conroy were unlucky to be on a losing
side.
The Lion Cubs continue to improve
each week after they humbled the Eagles in an entertaining match
which was transferred to Yeronga on Sunday. Headland, Voss and
McDonald each bagged three goals as the Cubs registered their
most impressive win to date. Eagles' frontman Robbie Williamson
also bagged 4 for the losers taking his season tally to 34 and
a share of the lead at the top of the goalkicking for the league.
The Eagles certainly had their chances to take match honours,
but flitted away opportunities with far too many rushed shots.
Best for the Cubs were McDonald, Knobel, Boulton, Bartlett and
Voss.
For the Zillmere boys, Copeland,
Bulley, Deeth, Watts and Williamson all played well. In the Wises
Road mud-heap, Southport very unconvincingly outmuscled Maroochydore
to remain undefeated at the top of the table. The halftime coaches
chat would no doubt have had the paint blistering from the walls
after kicking a meagre four goals ten for the first half. The
winless Roos however, showed plenty of heart in battling all
the way to the final siren. Should they be able to put in efforts
like that for the rest of the season they will certainly rattle
the cage of a few of the sides holding premiership aspirations.
Mackay jabbed three through for the day to share the competition's
goalkicking lead with Eagle Robbie Williamson. In the Sharks'
most disappointing effort this season Bradley, Bain, Martin and
Crossley were possibly their best. For the Roos Olive, Fisher,
Smith and Staunton all stood tall against their more fancied
rivals.
Broadbeach almost pulled off
the boilover of the season when they tripped at the final hurdle
in their blustery Klumpp Road battle with the Vultures. The Cats
led for most of the day and trailed Mounties by less than a straight
kick at the final change. However, the Vultures just had that
little bit more in the tank and fell over the line by 22 points.
It was an impressive performance by the Cats who more than matched
their bigger rivals in all departments. Veteran Brad Jones led
by example all day for Mounties, and with Dupuy banging through
five, leaves the Vultures firmly entrenched in the leading pack
on the table. The Cats' loss almost certainly draws the curtains
on their flag hopes, and they must now concentrate on avoiding
the dreaded wooden spoon .... although the Roos already have
their paw-prints all over it !!!! Vultures' best were Jones,
Harman, Dupuy, Davies and Edwards, while Cats to stand out were
Wilkinson, Taylor, Patching, Covino and Walsh.
Next Week
Round ten sees Broadbeach facing
a daunting task at the new-look Gabba against the Cubs on Saturday
evening, Mounties host cellar-dwellers Maroochydore, Morningside
take on a shaky Labrador at home, while on Sunday the Zillmere
boys travel to Mayne for the Northside derby. Unbeaten Southport
will have a well-earned bye.
Higgsy's Hints
Three winners last week gave
me 31/36 for the season .... mmmmm, I was robbed on the Mayne-Morningside
match !!! Let's see .... Lion Cubs will flog Broadbeach at the
Gabba by say, a conservative eight goals, if it's fine Mount
Gravatt will pump Maroochydore by twenty goals, Morningside might
get up from their death-bed against Labrador .... Panthers by
four goals, the Mayne-Eagles match will be nip-and-tuck all the
way with the Eagles getting the nod by three goals. Southport
will hammer the bye .... the unbeaten sharks most probably spending
the day in the "green room" or at the blackjack tables
at Jupiters.
AFL Footypix Tipping Competition
What a shocker .... yes, I had
a Barry of a round in the Footypix and that's all I'm sayin'
!!! David Chadwick continues to lead with 60, with Craig Sanderson
and Jim Anderson right up his clacker on 58 and 57 respectively.
Big movers for the week were Mitchell Ross (+14) and Wayne Lake,
Jim McArthur and Trevor Dann all (-8) places. David, Schultzy,
and Mitchell all managed a very solid 6, especially considering
the Hawks-Dogs draw.
