Mt. Gravatt took to the Maroochy
boys with a big stick on Saturday hopelessly smashing them by
ten big ones in nothing short of a methodical thumping. No sensational
teamwork required here .... the Vultures belted them from pillar-to-post
in a demolition-style performance which will see them take on
dual-premiership winners Southport in the final in September.
Yes, you heard correctly .... I'm making the big call now that
Mounties are the only side which may trouble the Sharks in their
grab for an unprecedented third consecutive flag. The Roos were
never in it .... in fact they didn't even force Mounties to work
up a sweat. Misko landed an effortless six for the Vultures with
Jones, Edwards, Grayson and James their best. For the Roos, Carter,
Vagg, Olive, Hamblett and Handley battled well.
Influential Labrador captain-coach
Rowan Wright staple-gunned his foot at work during the week,
but his players responded by nailing Morningside at Esplen Oval
on Saturday. The Tiges overcame the loss of Wright and seven
other regulars to continue the Panthers' dismal season and register
their first win for four weeks. After the match a relieved Wright
said "It was a sensational win considering the players we
had out and it releases a bit of the pressure on us." Labrador
squandered a string of early opportunities and trailed by two
goals late in the second term, but then started taking first
options to edge their noses in front shortly after the big break.
Andy Gowers continued his outstanding form by busting the match
apart in the third term and setting up a five-goal onslaught.
Brad Firman dominated the hit-outs all day for the Tiges and
was well supported by Joel Gurciullo. Gurciullo dobbed four with
Molloy and Hodgkin three each for the Tiges. Panther Pritchard
single-handedly kept Morningside's hopes alive bagging eight.
Best on the day were Gowers, Gurciullo, Edwards, Browne and Lamb
for the Tiges and Pritchard, Longlands, Tarrant and Ryan for
the Siders.
Mayne continue to improve (and
shock!) each week with a come-from-behind victory at home on
Sunday. The never-say-die Tigers gamely hung in all day to snatch
a much-needed win from the Eagles' claws, leaving them only one
win out of the five. Housego dominated up front for Mayne and
was rewarded with six goals for the day. Dobson proved a worthy
apprentice helping himself to three. Like last week's win over
the Panthers, it would take some digging around to find the last
time that the perennial wooden-spooners took an Eagle's scalp.
Mayne have now let it be known that the competition leaders should
all be starting to look over their shoulders. The Eagles can
now spend the next week lamenting over what could have been,
and watch their fourth spot on the ladder slip to five. Housego,
Pearce, Eagan, Dobson and Hastie were the best Tigers with Waters,
Pennington, Bulley, Deeth and Meunch the best Eagles.
Awful .... terrible .... even
pathetic .... all these words appear very apt in describing the
Cubs effort against Broadbeach on Saturday night. Dropped chest-marks,
missed opportunites and wrong options were the order of the day
for the Cubs .... maybe they should be the Teddy Bears the way
they tackled!!! Broady thoroughly deserved their win, and will
take some much-needed confidence into next week's match against
the Siders. The Cubs were lost without Notting and Voss who successfully
made the jump up to AFL level against the Bombers (although they
lost, too!!!) I feel a day's worth of set shot practice coupled
with about a hundred 440's might wake the boys up for next week.
Other News
Well the big news no doubt is
the breaking story of Southport's continuing AFL push with their
application for inclusion into next year's SANFL competition.
The Sharks have made no secret of their long-term plan to play
in the AFL, but have as yet failed to influence either the AFL
power-board or an AFL team wishing to merge. Make no mistake,
I have it on VERY good authority that the Sharks have now formally
applied to the SANFL for next year, as have the Northern Territory
League, as a stepping stone to the major league. The Territory
do have a better structure than the Sharks, and possibly have
the inside running should an application be successful. The question
must now be posed .... does the SANFL want to become a second-tier
fully-national competition ??? Only time will tell .....
Next Week
Round 11 sees an opportunity
for Mayne to prove themselves against top competition when they
take on the Sharks at Fankhauser Reserve. It also sees Broady
at home with the chance to finally end Morningside's flag hopes.
The Cubs will travel to Klumpp Road to tackle the Vultures while
Maroochydore make the trek to Labrador. All round 11 matches
are being played on Saturday. The Eagles have the bye.
Higgsy's Hints
Well, what can I say .... a shocking
1/4 and back to last year's form. This gives me 32/40 for the
season .... must have been too many aspirins with my coke !!!
Anyway, Southport will wipe Mayne like a dirty ass .... Sharks
by a conservative eight goals, Broady and Morningside will be
close .... maybe even a draw .... no, on current form I think
Broady by two points, the Vultures will let the Cubs know that
they're in the big league now, winning by five goals and Labrador
will make it a long, long trip home for the Roos when they steamroll
them by ten goals or more and pinch the Eagles' fourth spot.
