On December 13 1994, the SANFL announced that the Port Adelaide Football Club (currently playing in the SANFL) would become South Australia's second team in the AFL when a new licence became available.
The SANFL was told to prepare a possibility for a 2nd South Australian team as early as 1996. (The Adelaide Crows have a 5 year market exclusivity deal in SA until then.) Debate now raises as to when/if Port Adelaide will be admitted, as the AFL is not keen to expand to a 17 team competition. It was previously forseen that a Victorian club would fold or merge thus providing the way for a licence being made available. Fitzroy was seen as the strongest candidate to lose it's licence, due to it's financial problems, but the rescue of Fitzroy by the Nauru consortium means that there is no easily forseeable entry for Port Adelaide.
Another issue to be resolved is that of Port Adelaide's guernsey design and logo. Unlike the other expansion teams, Port has an already existing history - that of a black and white vertically striped guernsey and a Magpie logo. These however are already 'owned' by Collingwood in the AFL. Port is meant to have already registered 6 names as possibilities, including the Pirates, and the Raiders, whilst they are likely to retain black and white as their colours but add silver in addition. Port has been named as the NEXT team to join the AFL, but has to wait until at least 1997 for this to be accomplished. They have revealed their name as "Port Power".
Round 5, 1933 St Kilda vs North Melbourne. Nine Saints players are seriously injured during the game. They eventually finish the game with only 15 men on the ground, many still injured. Despite this managed to hang on for a 97 to 83 win. Emotional officials pin badges of recognition on the survivors guernseys. Badge is now incorporated into uniform.
1916 - Five of the nine VFL clubs go into recess due to the continuation of World War I. This leaves only Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond and Fitzroy to play a 12 round season. Fitzroy end season on the bottom of the Premiership Ladder with a 2-9-1 record. A final Four system is in use and so Fitzroy still gets to play in the Finals. Producing a remarkable form reversal, Fitzroy win all three finals matches to become Premiers, defeating Carlton in the Grand Final 85 to 56.
In 1994, the average size of a crowd at an AFL game was 28,615. In total, there were 16 games during the season that had attendances of more than 50,000 people.
The record crowd for an Australian Rules Football Game was the 1970 VFL Grand Final between Carlton and Collingwood at the MCG. It drew a crowd of 121,696. Subsequent modifications to the MCG mean that this figure is unlikely to be broken, due to a more restricted capacity.
