Glenelg jumped back in the five by beating top team Norwood by seven points at the Parade in a tough, entertaining clash on Friday night. Norwood bolted to three goal lead early and its defence played brilliantly to keep the Tigers goalless until well into the second quarter. However, Norwood themselves were unable to establish a big enough lead in that time and Glenelg's mid-field finally awoke to tie things away by three quarter time. The Redlegs held a two-goal lead at the twenty minute mark of the last quarter but Glenelg surged again, Sydney recruit James Byrne kicking the winning goal thirty minutes in. Chigwidden, Cook and Golding got Glenelg back into the contest while Norwood were well led by Bowman and Bassett in defence. Jason Marsh kicked three goals for the 'Legs. Norwood's Stuart Bown broke his leg after being acidentally kicked in a pack in the second quarter.
Port must be on course for another premiership as they are in the middle of their traditional mid-year slump, soon to be followed by their late season surge to a flag... This time they lost to the speedier Eagles at Woodville by four goals. Even without Matthew Pavlich up forward the Eagles were too lively around goals for Port. Nick Pesch sat in a forward pocket in his first game back to snaffle five goals. Eagle Rhett Biglands killed Port in the ruck and provided a marking option up forward, something Port missed though they also suffered from having a weaker than usual midfield with David Brown and Tony Bamford missing. First-gamer Shane Holmes kicked three for the Magpies.
West confirmed that they are the form team of the competition by whipping Central (suprise winner over Port at Alberton last week) by 82 points at the Ponderosa. Too bad they don't play finals in July. Fearsomely tattooed Adam Richardson kicked five and Dion Miles four for the Bloods while Bowen Lockwood kicked half of the Dogs' paltry six goals. A longer report would be forthcoming but for somebody at work nicking the page of the newspaper with the match report.
South virtually handed North the wooden spoon for this season with a 74-point thrashing of the Roosters at Gale Force 10 Oval. Twenty six of the thirty three goals were scored by the team going with the wind. Duncan (?) Draper led the way for South with four goals while Crow Shane Ellen was in good touch for the Panthers slotting three goals. Power players Morton and Naish each bagged three for North. Danny Morton, having got over that freak neck injury last year, this time did something more in keeping with the nature of modern football by pulling a hamstring. North will need to win at least two of their last six to get off the bottom, they'd want to improve an awful lot on their recent form to do that.
