Reports

Friday night produced another thrilling contest as the Eagles came from behind to toss West by seven points at Adelaide Oval.
The Bloods started superbly and led by as much as 25 points early in the second quarter. West ruckman Mark Stewart gave his little men plenty of touches (ooh!). Tim Symes and Dion Myles were in control across half-forward and they had a strong target in burly forward Adam Richardson. However by half time the Eags were back in the contest due to the brilliant on-ball work of Gavin Colville, who had 15 touches for the half.
The Woodville-West Torrensers came out fired up after half-time and improved performances from Biglands in ruck and continued brilliance from Colville enabled them to give their forwards every opportunity, and they led by eight points at "lemon time".
The last quarter was tight and tense as the Bloods mananged to tie the scores away twice, including in time-on in the last quarter, but the fitter Eagles finished the stronger to record a meritorious win. Colville ended up with 38 possessions to clearly win BOG. Cicolella, Pearce and Whelan all worked hard for the Blue, Green and Golds. Pavlich, Ugrinic and Holland all kicked two for the winners. For West, it was a much improved effort over last week, but again they struggled when their avenues to goal (Symes and Richardson) were held. Mark Stewart was the best big man on the night with 25 disposals and ten taps. Matt Bruhn (27 possessions) and Robert DiRosa (22 possessions) weren't bad. Richardson (three goals), Symes and Myles (two goals each) again did the bulk of the Blood scoring. Westies need Greg Mellor back on a flank to give them a bit more bite around goals.

Port Adelaide surprised no-one by doing just enough to account for lowly North at Prospect. However, this was enough to give them top spot over the Redlegs who had the bye. Port led comfortably all day without looking likely to tear the game apart.
Aaron Fiora may have collected six Magarey medal votes after his first two games after another outstanding effort. 24 touches and two goals from a wing was a handy day's work. Makes you wonder why he couldn't get a game until two weeks ago. Paul Evans had another solid performance for the Magpies up forward, slotting 4.3. Poulton (who surely shampoos with Coca-Cola) and Fiegert were great again down back for Ports and ensured that the Rooster forward line was an excitement-free zone most of the day. Pech kicked three for the men in Red and White while coach McDermott was pleased with the efforts of kids Swann, Byerlee and Nichol. Port coach Steven Williams was slighty annoyed that "We had everything to play for compared to them - their season is going to be over in four weeks while we've got the finals to look forward to, which you'd think should be enough to get our guys up." Don't worry Steven, you'll have a whole bunch of Crows and Power players free to take their places soon.

Sturt killed off Central's finals challenge with a convincing 41-point win over the Dogs at the Ponderosa. The Double Blues were far to tough and skillful in the first half and they skipped out to a 33-point half time lead that should have been a lot more but for poor kicking.
With their season on the line, the Doggies came out after the long interval determined to not go down without a yelp. Led by Captain Danny Hulm and ruck Damien Arnold they threw themselves at the ball and their opponents and kicked the last three goals of the third term to get the home crowd roaring and cut the margin to 13 points. However the superior class of Sturt eventually told as they kicked away again in the last quarter, thanks in part to the high number of turnovers committed by the Dogs.
Burton kicked 4.4 and White 2.3 for the Blues, and could have put the game out of Centrals reach with straighter kicking. Apart from them, the encouraging thing for coach Carman was Sturt's even spread of talent all over the ground. Brodie Atkinson, Damian Squire, Andrew Geddes, Tim Weatherald, Seamus Maloney and Matthew Powell all got leather poisoning at various stages of the game with the exception of the third quarter. Arnold was best again for Centrals, with seven disposals, 18 taps and a goal. The Hicks boys were also good in defence after half-time. A disappointed Peter Jonas said of his Central team "Sturt should have buried us in the second quarter and we picked up our work rate but when crunch time came we weren't good enough." Roll on 2000.

Glenelg made a mockery of the media's billing of their visit to Noarlunga as a "danger game", winning by 77 points after switching off with 10 minutes to go.
South had no answer for the patented Glenelg Line-Busting (TM) system. The Panthers' height advantage was cancelled by the Tigers' greater willingness to run and create space, while the Glenelg forwards in Cornes (six goals), Scripps (five) and McEntee (four) appreciated leading into the wide-open spaces of Noarlunga.
Higgins (31 disposals), Carr (30) and Chigwidden (28) were the stats stars for Glenelg. Ian Perrie was South's best, kicking two goals and filling in the gaps in their defence whenever he could. Clint Draper looked the goods, kicking four goals for the Panthers. Glenelg's injured list continues to grow with Simon Hele straining his shoulder ligaments while half-back Martin Mellody re-did his hammy. South coach Ken Applegarth paid his opponents the ultimate compliment by saying: "They beat us at the hard-ball gets, they ran harder, they worked harder off the ball. They did everything like a team I'd love to be coaching." Not this year Ken.
