Reports
Port has marched out to a two-game
lead at the head of the table by blasting a disintegrating South
outfit by 75 points at the Alberton Cemetery. I hope that someone
can give Port a decent game in the grand final.
South actually led by two points at quarter time but from then
it was Goodnight the Fox as Evans (six goals), Ricky O'Loughlin
(five) and Tony Bamford (three) had a day out for Port. Carter,
Fiegert and Fiora once again were very reliable across half-back
for the Magpies.
Margarine Medallist Andrew Osborn was best player in a losing
cause. Clint Draper had his second bag of four in as many weeks
for South. Power squad member Derek Murray kicked two goals for
South, but must have a bad reputation around the Port as he was
stretchered off during a Port game for the second time this season.
Glenelg did better during the
second-half downpour at Peckerland to defeat the Eagles by 23
points and displace them from third spot.
First-half fortunes ebbed and flowed as the Tigers took an early
lead only to see the Eagles notch five unanswered goals from
late in the first quarter to half-way though the second to lead
by 15 points. WWT's Adam Ugrinic and Gavin Colville were too
quick and creative for Glenelg as Robert Pyman marshalled the
Eagles troops up forward. However Glenelg steadied by kicking
three of the last four goals for the half, including an inspirational
one from Chigwidden, which appeared to defy the breeze. Thus
the Eagles' half-time lead was kept to a manageable four points
as the players headed for the changerooms.
Glenelg played classic wet-weather footy after half-time - they
were long and direct with the wind in the third quarter and gave
Cornes every opportunity up forward to compete one-out, and he
kicked two goals for the quarter to lead them to a 15 point lead
going into the last quarto. Then in the last they played to the
boundary line to perfection, actually outscoring the Eagles 2.3
to 1.1 for the quarter.
The Bays' revival was led by their ground level players such
as Chigwidden, Kelly, Burke, Picioane ("Picony" according
to the ABC commentators) who revelled in the heavy going. Cornes
was an effective spearhead kicking three goals from limited opportunities.
For the locals Colville was best again, closely followed by Ciccolella
("Siccolella", "Siccorella" or "Siccorelli"
depending on which of the ABC commentators you believe). Andrew
Rogers was solid in the Eagle defence though his tired frame
couldn't get him to a crucial contest late in the last quarter
which effectively sealed the result.
West kept the fight for the final
five interesting by booting the last five goals of their match
against Norwood to win by two points. As the rain gathered force,
I heard on the radio that Norwood had kicked the first goal of
the third quarter and presumed that they had a big enough lead
to win even if they didn't kick another goal. Hmm, not quite.
A crucial factor in the Blood'n'Tar revival was the nose injury
suffered by Damian Obst during the third movement. After that
Norwood lost drive heading into attack, while the Bluds' pressure
increased to save their season. Adam Richardson kicked the last
goal of the game half-way through the last quarter to put Wests
in front and the Redlegs looked unlikely to save the game thereafter.
"Ed is Dead" Richardson was the best for West with
14 kicks and nine marks from CHB. Matt Bruhn was lively on a
forward flank with 28 possessions and eight marks. Tim Symes
(three goals) and A.Richardson (two) were focal points as usual.
For the Redleggers Roger James opportuned to the tune of three
goals while Pascoe and Cunningham each booted two.
Sturt may have dominated possession
328 to 258, but in the end was grateful to get out of gaol against
cellar dweller North Adelaide, winning by the narrowest of margins
at Adelaide Oval.
Sturt held a modest lead for most of the day before North kicked
two goals into the breeze early in the last quarto to lead by
one point. The last 20 minutes was a defensive slog for North
as they held up waves of Double Blue attacks before conceding
a rushed behind at the 25-minute mark to level the scores. Ex-Rooster
Damien Squire continued the tradition of new Sturt recruits punishing
their former clubs by soccering through the winning point at
the 29-minute mark, good enough for a win.
Steven White (13 kicks, 11 marks, four goals) and Brodie Atkinson
(31 possessions, two goals, ex-Rooster) led the way for the men
hailing from the intersection of Cambridge and Oxford Terraces.
Squire had 29 possessions and kicked a goal. For North Naish,
Lehmann (24 possessions), Jefferies and Robertson all kicked
two. Leal also had 24 possessions (good for him).
