SANFL Round 21

Saturday 21 August

At Woodville Oval
EAGLES  2.3  6.8  9.8  15.11 101
Norwood  1.4  3.6  5.11   6.11  47
(crowd - 3114)

The Eagles stayed in the race for a top three finish by thrashing a faltering Norwood by nine goals at Pecker Park. Norwood's season is in jeopardy after losing three in a row, and suffering injuries to Sandford, Obst and Harvey on Saturday.

The longer the game went on, the more apparent it was that Norwood didn't have the firepower up forward to kick a winning score. The Eagles, however, had an array of forwards and utilities who were all handy around goal - Pesch, Ugrinic, Dylan, Crowell and Matthews were all multiple goalkickers for the Eags while only Eugene Warrior (two goals) could replicate the feat for Norwood. The 'Legs actually lost their best term for the match (the third) by a point after kicking 2.5 to 3.0. The Eagles then immediately showed how it should be done by blasting five goals in the first 15 minutes of the last quarter.

The Eagles' midfield were their stars again Robert Shirley (25 possessions), Justin Cicolella (26 possessions) and Rhett Biglands (12 disposals, 5 marks and 20 hitouts) all dominant. For the 'Legs Steven Pitt was a tower of strength in defence despite the fact the other team kicked 15 goals. Davey (21 touches) and Borlace (19 and a goal) were also good for Norwood. Eeg coach Mark Mickan was pleased to finally record a win over Norwood after two years of trying. "It was important we beat them so we know we can. It's unchartered waters for us now." They've got South and Central to come then the finals.

At Elizabeth Oval
CENTRAL  4.3  8.6  11.12  18.12 120
North  3.2  4.6   5.8   7.12  54
(crowd - unavailable)

Just like it's mathematically possible that you will be hit by a train on the way to work or school tomorrow, it is still mathematically possible for Centrals to make the finals after they pulped poor old North by eleven goals at the Dog Pound. For those who care Central must win their last two, West must lose a game and Norwood or Sturt must lose their last two, and Central's percentage must improve drastically.

North started brightly kicking the first two goals of the game but Centrals soon wrested the lead back and maintained control thereafter.

Damien Arnold was the chief enigineer of the Dogs' win, claiming 21 hitouts, 23 disposals and six marks to shade forgotten Crow Lucas Herbert (12 hitouts, 10 disposals and one mark). Bowen Lockwood kicked 6.5 to remind the Port Power selectors what forwards are supposed to do. Evergreen Scott Lee is enjoying life in attack, this time he kicked 3.2. Bello (30 disposals), MacGowan (24) and Switala (19) led the classy Centrals midfield. Coulter also kicked a couple. Danny Morton was outstanding for North, with 30 touches and 2.3. Pech also kicked 2.3 for the Roosters. Promising Shane Leal had 20 disposals. The rest, though, for North were shocking. After steady improvement for the last month, the Roosters are still on the bottom looking for a third win. "Without doubt this was our worst performance for the year" said a mightily fed up coach Chris McDermott. Only one more week to go.

At Glenelg Oval
GLENELG  4.3  7.4  13.6  17.9 111
Port  2.3  6.6   7.10   8.13 61
(crowd - 5922)

Glenelg played with agression and spirit not seen for years to humble top side Port by 50 points at the Bay. Perhaps this year's premiership isn't a foregone conclusion after all. Glenelg have now won six in a row and are the new form team of the comp.

After Fogden went off early with a knock to the knee, the unheralded Winstanley took over in ruck to send the Tigers streaming into attack. Glenelg stormed out to kick the first three goals of the match and surprised the Magpies with their hardness at the ball, or the player with it. The Magpies then dragged themselves back into the match as Phil McGuinness found plenty of Sherrin and Evans awoke on the forward line to kick a couple. Port got as far as nine points up late in the second term and it seemed as tho' they had weathered the early storm and would take control as expected. However Glenelg rallied again through Carr (two goals), Kelly (25 disposals, 5 tackles and a goal) and Chigwidden (29 possessions and a goal) to grab back the lead before half-time.

After such a pulsating and even first-half the second-half could not have provided more of a contrast. Glenelg ruled supreme in virtually every position on the field to rattle on ten goals to two after half-time. Picioane and Sherwood were coolly in control in defence, six-gamer Ben Howard gathered touches and ran away from his opponents at will, McEntee (four goals) did a Graham Cornes impersonation in the forward line and Brett Higgins lurked for three goals against his old team. Feddema (three goals) and Bartlett (two) rounded out things on the forward line. For Port, McGuinness (28 possessions, 2 goals) and Brown (18 possessions) were really the only two players to shine. Fiegert in defence was okay and Ricky O'Loughlin (18 handlings and a goal) showed a bit of spark up forward but there were too many Port players willing to leave the hard work to their teammates.

About the only consolations Port have are that they were ripe for a loss after virtually sealing the minor premiership last week, and that they will have quite a few AFL-listed players to choose from (plus the injured Leys and Carter) if they meet Glenelg again in the finals. Glenelg have to realise that the finals haven't started yet and they will need to keep winning for another month if they want to become the first team since South in 1964 to go from bottom to top in one year.

Sturt, West and South had the bye.
