Frequently Asked Questions - Web Edition - Manual Download & Upload

Manually Downloading & Uploading

Overview

Manually downloading and uploading isn't hard. Both download and upload become a two-step process instead an automatic/click on a button process.

Downloading consists of visiting the Administration page on the web site and downloading and saving the file(s) onto your PC and then going into the Organiser program and manually importing the file(s).

Uploading consists of going into the Organiser program and saving a file and then going to the Administration page on the website to upload it.

If you are manually downloading and uploading then it is recommended that you turn off the 'Automatically communicate with your web competition' feature in the Connection section of the Web Competition options.

The following instructions assume that you have done this.

The Administration page on the web site

You will need to use the Administration page of the web site for both downloading and uploading, so we recommend that once you have visited the Upload/Download page you add it to your favourites (or bookmarks).

An easy way to get to the Administration page is to go to the Tippers page on the web site. The web address in your browser will end tippers.cgi or tippers.pl (depending on the type of web server). If you change the end of the line to admin.cgi or admin.pl

eg
http://www.yourname.com.au/cgi-bin/tipping/tippers.cgi becomes
http://www.yourname.com.au/cgi-bin/tipping/admin.cgi

or
http://www.yourname.com.au/scripts/tipping/tippers.pl becomes
http://www.yourname.com.au/scripts/tipping/admin.pl

and then press enter you should then be asked for your Administrator password - this is your Footy Organiser password. Entering it and clicking 'OK' will take you to the Administration page where your should click on the 'Upload or Download' link.

Downloading then Importing

Downloading files.
If you are manually downloading then depending on the options you have selected you may have to download up to three files.

  1. You will always have to download the relevant tips file (tipsn.dat where n is the round number).
  2. If your tippers are joining on the web pages then you may need to download the 'joined' tippers file, though this is usually only for the first round or two of the season (joinedn.dat where n is the round number).
  3. If you allow your tippers to change their passwords on the website then you will have to download the 'changed password' file (chgpass.dat) every time.

First you need to go to the Administration page of your web competition.

Downloading the file(s) is (or should be) simple, though it can depend on which web browser you are using. You should just click on the link to the required file and a "Save as..." or "Save this file to disk" window should appear. However, if this doesn't occur (your browser might display the contents of the file!) then you should click on the link with your right mouse button and choose the option to "Save Target As..." or "Save Link as..." - This should display the appropriate "Save as..." dialog.

We recommend you create a folder to save the files and remember where it is (as you need to find it in the next step). You must save these files with the correct names (tipsn.dat or joinedn.dat where n is the round number eg tips5.dat or joined1.dat or chgpass.dat).

Please note that you might see these file names without the '.dat' on the end - this depends on the settings on your PC.

Importing downloaded files.
To import the downloaded information into the footy database you should start the 'Organiser' program, then click on the small down arrow on the bottom of the 'Synchronise' button and click on the 'Import' button. Then select the folder that contains the file(s) then select the file(s) and click the 'Import' button. You can select multiple files by holding down the CTRL and clicking on the required files. For example, in Round 1 you may want to select tips1.dat, joined1.dat and chgpass.dat.

Importing Tips - If you import a tips file more than once then the latest import overwrites the earlier one. If a tipper has entered tips more than once on the Internet (they might have changed their mind) then they will have more than one record in the tips file. Their latest tips will overwrite any earlier ones.

Importing new 'joined' tippers - If you import a new tippers file more than once then the latest import overwrites the earlier one and only tippers who have joined since the last import are added to your list of tippers.

The program Message Bar will indicate success, or if there were any problems. Clicking on the Message Bar will show further details if required.

Saving and uploading

If tippers are currently joining on the website then you should download and import the 'joined' tippers file before uploading. If you are allowing tippers to change thier passwords on the website then it is recommended that you download & import the chgpass.dat file before uploading.

Saving the information for uploading.
Start the 'Organiser' program, then click on the small 'down arrow' on the bottom of the 'Synchronise' button and click on the 'Save' button. This will save a file called 'upload.dat' in the folder that you specify. You may want to save it into the same folder that you created for the downloaded files, but you can save it into any folder of your choosing.

Uploading the saved file.
Uploading the file is done using the Administration pages on the website. Go to the Administration page then the Upload/Download page. Towards the bottom of the page is the Upload section.

Press the 'Browse...' or 'Choose File' button (depending on your browser), then browse to the folder where you saved the 'upload.dat' file, select file (you might see the file name as 'upload' without the '.dat') and press the 'Open' button. Once file name is displayed, press the 'Upload File' button to complete the Upload.

Step-by-step instructions for each round

Prior to the start of the season you will need to download and upload as required.

Prior to start of season.
Upload whenever competition or web interface options are changed. If you have tippers joining during this period then you should download & import 'joined' tippers and any password changes BEFORE you save & upload.

Each round during the season.

Downloading & Importing then Closing the round.
After the cut-off time for the round has passed (some Organisers do this on Monday morning just before they do the Results) you should download & import the following files. It doesn't matter in which order you download them, and if you select them all when importing then the program will import them in the correct order, but if you import them individually you MUST import them in the correct order:

  1. The new 'joined' tippers file (joinedn.dat) - if there is one.
  2. The password changes file (chgpass.dat) - will only be available if you have enabled this option.
  3. The tips file (tipsn.dat)

Once you have downloaded and imported you can then 'close the round' using the 'Close' button on the 'Organiser' toolbar and print the Selection report if required.

Entering Results then Saving & Uploading.
Once all the games in the round have been completed and you have downloaded, imported and closed the round you should enter the Results using the 'Results' button available from the 'Organiser' toolbar. You can then save & upload the latest competition infomation to the web site.

You can either type in the scores or use the Import button on the results screen to select the results file that you have saved from our Results page on our website.

The program normally tries to download the results automatically from our website, and if you are having to use manual upload and download, it is likely that this will also fail. If thsi is the case we recommend that you turn off the 'Automatically Download' option by clicking on the small down arrow next to the 'Download' button on the results screen.

Uploading Reports

Uploading reports is also a two stage process. Firstly you need to go to Reports screen by clicking on the 'Reports' button on the 'Organiser' toolbar, then you need to save each report you want to upload.

Select each report that you wish to upload, alter any options for that report as required and then click on the 'Save' button. You should save the report as a Web page into the location of your choice (we suggest the same location that you saved the 'upload.dat file'). Do NOT alter the name of the report, as the web pages will be looking for these particu;ar file names.

Uploading the reports is done using the Administration pages on the website. Go to the Administration page then the Upload/Download page. Towards the bottom of the page is the Upload section.

Press the 'Browse...' or 'Choose File' button (depending on your browser), then browse to the folder where you saved the report file(s), select the required report file (you might see the file name as (eg) 'TipperLadderReportnn.htm' without the '.htm') and press the 'Open' button. Once file name is displayed, press the 'Upload File' button to complete the Upload.

To upload more than one report you will need to browse to and upload each report seperately.

Report names (where nn is the round number):

TipperLadderReportnn.htm   Tipper Ladder
SelectionReportnn.htm   Tipper Selections
FixturesReportnn-nn.htm   Fixtures Results
PaymentsReportnn.htm   Payments
Rnn_KSEL.HTM   Knock Out Selections (if applicable)
Rnn_KLAD.HTM   Knock Out Ladder (if applicable)
Snn_nnLD.HTM   Selective Ladder (if applicable)

Uploading Rules

Uploading rules is selected on the Rules Page section of the Web Competition options. If you have selected 'Visible to tippers' then your Rules as specified on this page are uploaded whenever you Save & Upload. If you alter your rules than you will need to do a manual upload for the changes to be updated on your web competition pages.
